United identify the defender they want to replace Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans this summer – report

Manchester United appear to have identified Koni De Winter as a centre-back they wish to acquire this summer.

Lindelof’s Man United career appears to be reaching its logical conclusion given how low down the pecking order he is under manager Ruben Amorim. The Peoples Person noted that he appears to be seeking a return to Benfica.

As for Evans, the ageing Northern Ireland defender was never expected to be a long-term solution to United’s defensive troubles. Having returned to Old Trafford on a free transfer, Evans has been sidelined through injury.

Given United’s constant injury troubles at the back, with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez still unavailable and Ayden Heaven’s concerning injury during the 3-0 win over Leicester City, it makes sense for the Amorim to chase a new defensive signing, particularly if the club is to offload some stale players.

CaughtOffside reported this morning that United are interested in pursuing De Winter this summer, although they may face some competition in the race to sign him.

“According to CaughtOffside sources, the Red Devils are monitoring Genoa defender Koni De Winter along with Premier League rivals Tottenham,” the report read.

“The 22-year-old Belgian defender, who is valued at €30-35 million, has attracted the attention of the clubs at the top of English football.”

In addition, the article supported the notion that both Evans and Lindelof are on the way out, stating: “The Red Devils are expected to lose defenders Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans in the summer transfer window.”

De Winter has enjoyed a promising season, averaging 1.4 tackles, 3.9 ball recoveries, and 4.3 clearances per game in 17 Serie A appearances.

He has also made the most of his imposing 191 cm frame, winning a whopping 73% of his aerial duels. He has also scored three goals, proving that he could be well-utilised when United go up for corners. (Stats via Sofascore)

While the latest report claims that De Winter may not be Amorim’s priority signing this summer, it is well worth considering bringing the 22 year old to Old Trafford due to his youth and talent, not to mention United’s need for reinforcements at the back.

So long as a transfer race with Spurs doesn’t push De Winter’s valuation too high, United would do well to pursue the Belgian rising star.
