United hold surprise talks about signing gifted defender who saw his contract mysteriously terminated last year – report

Manchester United are reportedly fighting with West Ham United for the signing of Oumar Solet.

The Udinese star has taken little time to establish himself as one of Serie A’s most resilient defenders this season, sparking interest from Premier League clubs in the process.

The highly-rated central defender saw his contract at RB Salzburg terminated by mutual agreement in 2024. Udinese knocked on his doors, and secured his services ahead of the winter transfer window.

The Frenchman only made his debut in January of this year and there are already suggestions of a summer exit.

According to Messaggero Veneto (via Sport Witness), United and West Ham have made contact to explore the possibility of signing Solet.

The 25-year-old joined Udinese on a short-term deal with his contract due to expire in 2027.

It is stated that suitors have been encouraged to test the waters as the club’s hierarchy have already sought replacements for their star defender.

Known for his pace and composure, Solet could prove to be a solid option to play the wide centre-back role under Ruben Amorim, who is set to oversee a defensive overhaul this summer.

Both Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are set to leave as free agents and Lisandro Martinez is unlikely to be available this year after undergoing surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligament in February.

However, the pursuit is not going to be straightforward for the Red Devils as Udinese will not consider offers below €40m.

Further, Solet is a right-footed player. In Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, and Leny Yoro, Amorim is blessed with several quality right-footed centre-backs.

Accordingly, United would be better off spending big on a left-footed defensive option.
