Manchester United have started to work on a contingency plan to make a managerial change.
Ruben Amorim will be on the touchline to face Sunderland at Old Trafford over the weekend. However, it is going to be an uphill task for the Portuguese tactician to stay at the helm beyond the October international break.
United have lost 17 times in 33 Premier League games since his appointment in November. Another defeat could prove to be the final nail in the coffin.
Carrick would be willing to replace Amorim
According to talkSPORT, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is determined to back his first managerial appointment for as long as possible, but United have started to consider their options should they feel forced to make a change.
United might consider bringing in a short-term option at this stage of the season, as high-profile managers are usually reluctant to take over mid-season.
It is claimed Michael Carrick would be “tempted by a return” to United.
Carrick, who last managed Middlesbrough in the Championship, was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant at Old Trafford. Following Solskjaer’s departure, the former midfielder had a brief stint as the Red Devils’ interim manager.
In three matches under his command, United remained undefeated, beating Villarreal in the Champions League and Arsenal in the Premier League.
Carrick’s name was discussed at United before Amorim’s arrival last year.
Man United bosses like Iraola
It is believed United would prefer Amorim’s successor to have experience of English football.
Ineos reportedly admire Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who has entered the final year of his contract at Vitality Stadium.
The Spaniard led the Cherries to their highest ever finish of ninth last season. Iraola’s side have started the new season strongly despite losing their starting centre back pairing of Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi.
