A Manchester United fan has been charged with slapping Manchester City attacker Jack Grealish during the derby on Sunday.
Both sides played out a 0-0 draw with relatively few clear-cut chances at either end.
United certainly felt they could have won the game but both sides looked content with the draw at the end of the match.
Sky Sports pundits Roy Keane and Gary Neville both criticised the supposed friendly nature of the game and the players’ embracing one another after full time.
Nonetheless, whilst the match itself was quite a tepid affair on the pitch, there were a couple of incidents off it involving the home fans.
The Guardian report that “a man has been charged with assault for allegedly slapping Jack Grealish at Old Trafford at the end of the goalless derby between Manchester United and Manchester City on Sunday.”
The England international came on as a substitute in the 74th minute and is said to have been near the Stretford End tunnel when the incident took place.
The Greater Manchester Police released a statement claiming that a 20-year-old man from Droylsden had been charged with assault.
“He will appear at Manchester magistrates court on 14 July. This charge relates to an incident which took place at Old Trafford yesterday.”
Both clubs declined to comment to The Guardian when contacted due to the issue being an ongoing legal matter.
There was already controversy surrounding the match as Man City boss Pep Guardiola labelled some United fans as “lacking class” due to chants aimed at Phil Foden’s mum during the match.
City released a statement claiming to be “shocked and disgusted” but the Football Association have already ruled that they won’t take any action against United.
