Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho to leave the club this month in search of better fortunes elsewhere.
The long-term future of Rashford and Garnacho has been the subject of intense speculation over the past few weeks, amidst suggestions that United are open to offers for both players.
Rashford has not played for United in their last nine matches across all competitions while Garnacho doesn’t appear to future very highly in Ruben Amorim’s plans.
Both stars continue to be linked with a number of clubs both in England and abroad.
Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have been mentioned as the two parties with the strongest interest in Rashford. Meanwhile, Napoli are in talks with United over the signing of Garnacho while Chelsea are also considering making a bid for him.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Ferdinand insisted that it would be in the best interests of Rashford and Garnacho to part ways with United, as it could help them rediscover their love for football.
The six-time Premier League winner said, “There’s no doubt in my mind that these players are better than what they are producing right now. But when the shirt feels so heavy it’s difficult to get out of the trenches sometimes.”
“It’s normally not one person who can get you out of these types of situations but where are those individuals you need? I don’t see enough of them at the moment.”
“The worrying thing is that these players are leaving and looking like they are spreading their wings and breathing again. McTominay looks brilliant and look at Elanga at Nottingham Forest. Even Sancho looks like a different person at Chelsea.”
“If I’m sitting there and advising Rashford right now I’m saying ‘just go’. You should look at McTominay and say that’s what I want to follow. He’s enjoying life, he’s enjoying his football again. Marcus Rashford’s face tells you he hasn’t enjoyed football for the last three years.”
“I want to see these kids smiling, I love the young kids coming through and playing well. Garnacho is probably sitting there thinking, this is Man United. I don’t want to leave but (if I do) I might start enjoying myself a bit more.”
Ferdinand was asked whether Rashford’s time at United has come to an end.
The ex-England international replied, “Who in our time had three years grace? I don’t know anyone who hung around at a football club for three years when they were not doing well.”
“I think for both parties it’s much better for them to separate.”
Following United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton over the weekend, Amorim labelled the current squad as perhaps the worst in the club’s illustrious history.
However, according to Ferdinand, the Portuguese coach’s remarks are only intended to make it known just how big of a job he has on his hands.
