United battling European giants for “gifted” Eredivisie midfielder, INEOS will lick their lips at his price tag – report

Manchester United suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday, September 14, in the Premier League.

Despite starting the game well, the Red Devils failed to maintain control and were made to pay the price.

City took the lead through a Phil Foden header, before Erling Haaland’s second-half brace put the game to bed.

One of the major issues for Ruben Amorim in the game was the midfield, where the Red Devils are still looking out of place.

Midfielders had an off day

Amorim started with Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes in the middle of the park, before bringing on Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro.

Unfortunately, none of them managed to take control of the midfield.

United were linked with multiple midfielders this summer, but opted against any addition in the position before the end of the summer window.

That already looks like a costly decision, although the Red Devils are expected to make amends in 2026. The likes of Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton remain on Amorim’s agenda, but recent reports have named Jorthy Mokio as an option as well.

A talented young midfielder

Mokio is the latest prodigy to emerge out of Ajax’s fabled academy. The 17 year old has registered five appearances already this season, including two starts.

Nevertheless, the Belgian has already captured the imagination of United, although they are not the only club eyeing the player, according to Caught Offside.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are already hot on his heels, while Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly in the race as well.

A defensive midfielder by trade with an impressive left foot, Mokio is also comfortable in various roles in the middle of the park. He can cover at the back as well.

With the player under contract until 2027, Ajax have no desire to let him go. However, the report adds that a deal could be possible for €25-30m.

The move is not without risks, given that the teenager is relatively unproven. However, given United’s current situation, it is a risk that INEOS could be tempted to take.
