Tweets of the Week: VAR drama as Spurs and Liverpool players bicker

Football Twitter lit up on Saturday with one of the most incredible VAR moments we’ve ever seen in the Premier League.

We’ve seen plenty of mistakes and errors in recent years, but no one could quite believe it when VAR seemingly confirmed that Luis Diaz’s first-half strike was offside, despite appearing marginally onside, during Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Liverpool.

A PGMOL statement after the game confirmed that it was, in fact, the incorrect decision and absolutely bedlam reigned online. Here’s a taster of what went down.

The PGMOL have done the impossible: made Gary Neville feel sympathy for Liverpool Football Club™.

“PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool.”

PGMOL statement on disallowed Liverpool goal vs Spurs

We now go live to Liverpool for reaction.

Something tells me Spurs fans won’t have too much sympathy for Liverpool.

There’s a small child in a Liverpool cap crying in my block. Better than a trophy.

Even national teammates are having it out.

Klopp criticises ‘crazy’ decisions as Liverpool fall to late own goal

One area where the VAR could improve is by completing the most basic task of their job, for starters.

VAR is a tricky system to get right, so much can go wrong, for instance what if the VAR just forget to look at stuff?

Here’s a novel idea: what if match officials got it right the first time? Crazy, I know.

PGMOL statements are so funny. You’d lose a match because of a refereeing decisions and they send out a statement saying that you’re right for being upset. And then just move on.

— Zito (@_Zeets) September 30, 2023

As it turns out, their explanation didn’t actually explain anything correctly.

So the VAR, Darren England, checked offside thinking the onfield decision was “goal.”

It was a quick offside check because it was clear Diaz was onside, so he told the referee “check complete”.

In telling the ref “check complete” he is saying the onfield decision was correct.
