Triumphant Amorim credits one defining moment that “changed the game” in United’s 3-0 takedown of Athletic

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has identified Dani Vivian’s sending-off as the moment that flipped the game on its head, as the Red Devils beat Athletic Club 3-0 at Estadio de San Mamés.

United now have one foot in the final of the Europa League following their triumphant victory over Athletic in the first leg of their semi-final tie.

Casemiro opened the scoring after United endured early pressure from the hosts in Bilbao, before Vivian was sent off for a foul on Rasmus Højlund that led to a penalty.

Bruno Fernandes stepped up to take the spot-kick and he made no mistake, doubling United’s advantage. The skipper made it three just before the break with a top-class finish.

United could have had more but they were disappointed by the bar and the post either side of the interval.

After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to TNT Sports and gave his verdict on the result and his side’s performance.

The United head coach said [as quoted by BBC], “The result is really good, but we have to understand the result at the same time.”

“We struggled a lot at the beginning and the sending off changed the game.”

“Any game can change with one situation. We had an opportunity to score one more. This is not done and they can do the same at Old Trafford.”

“They’re really strong and intense. We need to be prepared.”

“Manuel Ugarte with a lot of experience was a little nervous, Patrick [Dorgu] was nervous.”

“Players like Casemiro, Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes help a lot.”

On Harry Maguire, who demonstrated some silky footwork in the build-up to Casemiro’s opener, Amorim joked that the England international is “a good winger.”

Amorim added, “Sometimes there is moments in our life and Harry has had difficult moments. Everything he does is good for the team, so we have to enjoy.”

The 4-0year-old Portuguese coach warned that the job is not done as Athletic Club can still hurt them at Old Trafford next week.

“Of course we are have an advantage. We have our fans, but again this could change. Anything can happen in one game.”

Amorim also insisted that caution needs to be exercised over the fitness of a number of players including Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu.
