Trio of United women’s stars called up for England duty after sensational recent performances

It has been a difficult and disappointing season for Manchester United Women. Their campaign petered out with an underwhelming 1-0 loss to Chelsea, resulting in a fourth-placed finish in the Women’s Super League. Additionally, the Red Devils also crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, suffering defeat at the hands of German giants Bayern Munich. Marc Skinner has come under scrutiny for his team’s performances across the season and his poor win rate. It was a season that saw the mighty Reds win only 11 of their 22 Women’s Super League fixtures. Still, the summer is always an exciting time for the football club, with transfer rumours beginning to swirl and international matches to be played. The England Women’s squad was recently announced for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Ukraine and, in news that will surely be music to the ears of all fans of the Red Devils, three United players made the cut. Maya Le Tissier While it was not a successful season for the United team collectively, certain individuals within the group produced quality, reliable performances across the season. One such player is central defender Maya Le Tissier, who played in every Super League game of the season. Le Tissier has been a rock at the back for the Red Devils, leading the back line with authority and tenacity. Her defensive positioning has been characteristically excellent, and her aerial prowess is a threat in both boxes, with the 24-year-old managing one goal and two assists across the season. Le Tissier will be hoping to add to her 13 international caps and work towards cementing her position in the starting 11, filling the void left due to Millie Bright’s retirement. Jess Park Jess Park has established herself as a key member of Skinner’s squad since arriving from United’s sky blue Manchester rivals in September. The right winger adapted to the demands of playing for United exceptionally well, starting all but three of the team’s Super League fixtures. It did not take long for Park to showcase her creativity and attacking flair. She scored and assisted in just her third game for United, helping the team achieve a commanding victory against the London City Lionesses. Across the season, Park chipped in with six goals and five assists, earning the privilege of wearing the number eight shirt. Park will be hoping to add to her 25 caps and five goals, though she will have her work cut out as England’s forward line is brimming with talent. Here’s hoping Park can replicate her United form while representing her country. Ella Toone Ella Toone missed a significant chunk of the Super League season after suffering a hip injury that ruled her out for over three months. Toone returned to the team in April, picking up vital minutes that assured England head coach Sarina Wiegman that she was capable of making an impact on international duty. Despite her time in the treatment room, Toone still enjoyed a fairly solid season. Despite being limited to just 14 appearances, the England international managed to chip in with three goals and five assists. Toone has been a regular for England in recent years, playing a key role as Wiegman’s side claimed a second consecutive European Championship last summer. Across 68 international appearances, Toone has scored a seriously impressive 24 goals and she will surely be hoping to add to that tally in the upcoming qualifiers.
