The New Year is just days away and with it so is the opening of the 2023 January transfer window. The Premier League resumes this weekend and clubs will be looking at how they can utilise the winter window to strengthen their squads after the World Cup.

Manchester United and Arsenal could be among the busiest clubs with the Red Devils seeking a Cristiano Ronaldo replacement and the Gunners eyeing a forward and a midfielder, particularly with Gabriel Jesus’ injury.

Armando Broja’s long-term problem will similarly force Chelsea into the market although they have secured a deal to sign Christopher Nkunku in the summer. Liverpool, likewise, might decide that problems with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota require them to utilise the window while they also remain linked with an abundance of midfielders.

Manchester City will likely be the quietest member of the Premier League’s Big Six in January but Tottenham may also look to make signings to boost Antonio Conte’s chances of delivering a much-needed top-four finish.

Express Sport rounds up all the latest transfer news and gossip throughout the day below.

Arsenal may ‘break bank’ for ex-youth player

Arsenal are prepared to bring their former youth player Ismael Bennacer back to north Lond by triggering his release clause at AC Milan, reports in Italy suggest.

The Algerian midfielder has attracted interest from all over Europe after becoming a mainstay in Serie A with the Rossoneri.

And with multiple clubs competing for him, the Gunners are keen to meet the £44m mentioned in his release clause, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Bennacer spent two years with the Gunners before moving on to Empoli in 2017, and he may welcome the chance to prove himself after failing to make a single appearance the first time around.

United ‘convince’ Gakpo to join

Even if the financial aspect of the Cody Gakpo deal is complicated, Manchester United have made huge progress in their attempts to sign the PSV Eindhoven star.

The Red Devils are expected to submit an offer in excess of £40million for the Netherlands international after ‘convincing’ Gakpo to move to Old Trafford to join Erik ten Hag’s revolution.

Journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, has claimed the 23-year-old is already keen on the idea of moving to Manchester.

“The player is already convinced of the idea of joining Manchester United and so we wait for the financial details to fall into place,” he said.

“Gakpo has an understanding of Erik Ten Hag and what he is trying to achieve at United, where he has impressed with his coaching methods.

Man Utd Gakpo bid hits snag

Manchester United’s prospective swoop for Cody Gakpo may run into complications with PSV Eindhoven reportedly set to demand the majority of the money up front.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Old Trafford has introduced the need for someone to take his place and it is thought that United will lodge a £44million bid for Gakpo in January.

According to Eindhovens Dagblad, such an offer would meet PSV’s asking price but a hidden element could prove crucial.

The Dutch giants reportedly want a ‘well-structured deal’, with the way it’s paid just as important as the transfer fee itself. PSV are also thought to be keen on negotiations concluding early in January so they have a chance to scout out Gakpo’s replacement.

Howe plays down Thuram link

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has thanked Allan Saint-Maximin for putting in a good word with France team-mate Marcus Thuram but stopped short of saying he would be entering the race.

The 25-year-old has scored 10 goals in the Bundesliga this season and is available on a free transfer in June when his contract expires.

When learning that Saint-Maximin had put in a good word, insisting he would try to convince Thuram to head to St James’ Park, Howe told reporters: “Well done Maxi!

“He’s a top player but no more than that. He was one of the ones I watched in the World Cup, but no more than that.”

Juve pair on Chelsea radar

Chelsea could look to resolve their midfield conundrum by completing a double swoop for Juventus duo Adrien Rabiot and Weston McKennie, according to reports.

Rabiot and McKennie both impressed at the World Cup campaigns with their respective nations, with the Blues said to be interested in securing deals for both players.

According to Calciomercato, Juve will block Rabiot from departing the club in the January transfer window if fellow midfielder Paul Pogba suffers a setback in his recovery from a knee injury.

Juve are reluctant to cash in on Rabiot while they are left without Pogba and that could hold the key in opciinij

Man Utd weigh up keeper options

Manchester United have transfer interest in Diogo Costa and Yann Sommer at a time where the futures of David De Gea and Dean Henderson are up in the air, reports say.

The Red Devils are poised to examine their goalkeeping options at the end of the campaign. And while they want De Gea to stay on reduced wages, Atletico Madrid are keen on a reunion with their former No 1.

United are keen to tie De Gea down to a new contract on reduced terms, with 90min saying Erik ten Hag has been impressed by the way the shot-stopper conducts himself.

Yet if he goes, then Costa and Sommer are being eyed as possible replacements. Portugal international Costa recently penned a new deal with Porto but could still be sold by the Primeira Liga giants.

PSG want Man Utd star

Manchester United midfielder Fred has emerged a surprise target for Paris Saint-Germain with the club ready to consider a high offer if it arrives in January.

The 29-year-old has been with the Red Devils since 2018 after a £52m switch from Shakhtar Donetsk but has largely fallen below expectations at Old Trafford.

According to The Sun, he is a surprise target for PSG manager Christophe Galtier’s wishlist at the end of his first season at the helm.

And while Erik ten Hag remains a ‘big fan’ of Fred – his attitude in particular – United are ready to listen to offers, but only if his suitors meet their £30million valuation.

Chelsea join Fernandez fight

Chelsea have already wrapped up two deals before the January transfer window has even opened and it appears Enzo Fernandez could be their main target to become the third signing to arrive at Stamford Bridge.

The Benfica star, 21, was named Young Player of the Tournament at the World Cup after some stellar displays for Argentina. Europe’s elite are tracking his situation with the Portuguese giants holding firm over their £105m valuation.

Reports even suggested Liverpool had an £88m bid rejected, but it seems Chelsea are now moving to the front of queue of clubs wanting to sign the combative midfielder.

With N’Golo Kante and Jorginho on the way out of the club as their contracts expire in June, Graham Potter could have a new midfield by the end of the transfer window – with Fernandez potentially offered the chance to move to west London.

Fernandes drops Raphinha hint

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has admitted he would love to play with Raphinha again amid reports Barcelona are already considering selling the Brazil winger.

The Portuguese played with the former Leeds man at Sporting Lisbon and waxed lyrical about how the 25-year-old would “give everything” after he was asked by The Athletic to name a player he would like to reunite with.

“So many. Raphinha, who is now at Barcelona, would be one,” he said. “The chemistry between me and him was really good. I didn’t play with him for a long time at Sporting, but I felt he was a team-mate who would give everything for me.”

It comes after the Brazilian was linked with a move back to the Premier League just five months after moving to La Liga in a £57m transfer, with Sport claiming the club are not impressed.

Chelsea capture £18m Brazilian starlet

Chelsea have struck an £18million deal to sign Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Vasco da Gama, who is set to become the third signing of the Graham Potter era in west London.

The Blues have seemingly seen off competition from the likes of Newcastle and Manchester City to land the talented 18-year-old, who has had scouts purring with his performances in South America.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is now reporting that Chelsea have a deal in place to land the highly-rated teenager, who was born in 2004.

The Blues have designated time to negotiate with both his agent and family in the past few months.

Carragher hints at Klopp £250m demand

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has asked the club’s owners for up to £250million to spend in the transfer window next summer.

The pundit says that is part of the reason Fenway Sports Group are looking for new investment at Anfield. FSG have been open to offers for Liverpool since November, but Carragher reckons there may not be a full-scale takeover at Anfield.

Carragher says Klopp will have told the club’s hierarchy he will need that much to spend at the end of this season. But FSG are unable to provide those funds, hence the search for new investment.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: “It’s interesting whether it’s a sale or an investment. I think there’s no doubt that Jurgen Klopp has said to Liverpool’s owners ‘I need £200m-£250m to spend in the summer’.

Man Utd scouts ‘watched Kudus’

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is reportedly keen on reuniting with Mohammed Kudus, another Ajax protege he worked with in the Netherlands, with a January move on the cards.

According to Fabrizio Romano, scouts were in attendance to watch the 22-year-old ahead of a potential move before Ten Hag took over. The Athletic report that the Red Devils boss is an admirer of the Ghanaian’s talents and a move could be in the pipeline in the winter transfer window.

It is believed that Premier League duo Liverpool and Chelsea are also taking a keen interest in Kudus alongside Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, but the Ten Hag factor could be enough to persuade Kudus to link up with his former manager once again.
