Man United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo could be the subject of a bid from Tottenham before the transfer window closes, according to reports.

Writing for GiveMeSport, journalist Neil Moxley claims that Spurs are keen on securing the 20-year-old’s services for £60m.

Thomas Frank’s side have seen their move for Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze hijacked by North London rivals Arsenal.

However, they are still in the market for an attacking midfielder with James Maddison set to be sidelined for an extended period after picking up an injury in pre-season.

Amorim is not a big fan of Mainoo

The England international was an unused substitute during the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal last weekend. It was telling that head coach Ruben Amorim chose to send on Manuel Ugarte when he decided to replace the tiring Casemiro.

Speaking in pre-season, Amorim also expressed dissatisfaction with Mainoo’s tendency to slow down the game when he is in possession:

“His perfect position is more near the ball, always with the ball. He’s a big talent, and you guys know better than me that he is a big talent. He needs to increase the rhythm, the pace. I’m always on top of that with Kobbie because he is so good sometimes, but he can be better.”

Man United could be open to selling

As Mainoo is a homegrown player, his departure would go down as pure profit on the balance sheet. Combined with the fact that Amorim does not see him as a key member of his squad, there is a chance that he could be let go.

The money raised from his departure could be used to sign a midfielder with traits that a more to Amorim’s liking. Fans would be hoping for a new keeper to be brought in as well.
