Tottenham eyeing Villarreal’s Pau Torres as Spaniard is added to wish list

Tottenham boss Nuno Espírito Santo continues to look for solutions to improve the first-team squad at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, with the club now being linked with interest in Villarreal’s Spanish international center-back Pau Torres.

As reported by Times Sports Paul Hurst per Veronics Brunati, Spurs are in the hunt to continue improving their backline after losing long-time stalwarts Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen this summer.

The club has already brought in Atalanta Bergamo’s Argentina international Cristian Romero this summer in a deal that set the club back €55million with new Director of Football Fabio Paratici hitting the ground running with an impressive move to hopefully push the club forward.

Interest in Torres should come as no surprise despite the Romero deal, however, as Tottenham has been linked with additional center-back recruitment all summer.

Tottenham still in negotiation for Cristian Romero but no agreement yet on €55m fee – he’s the priority. 100%. ⚪️ #THFC

Plan B: open talks to sign 3 different defenders with same amount. Tomiyasu [€18m], Milenkovic [€15m] and Zouma [€25m].

Caleta-Car, NOT even an option.

— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) July 26, 2021

Fabrizio Romano mentioned that the club were tracking the likes of Bologna’s Japanese international Takehiro Tomiyasu, Fiorentina’s Serbian standout Nikola Milenković, and Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma. Other links to interest in Sevilla’s Jules Kounde were mooted, but the news of interest in Torres undoubtedly puts that to bed.

Should Torres be acquired, it would signal a combined £100+million pairing at the heart of the defense, with solid depth behind it in the vein of Davinson Sánchez, Eric Dier, Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga, and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Considerable options at the back would give Espírito Santo tactical options in his first season at Tottenham, allowing him to potentially deploy both a back three and a back four deployment depending on certain requirements. How Spurs handle the rest of the window remains to be seen, but their willingness to spend under the Espírito Santo-Paratici tandem is certainly encouraging.
