“Top, top player”: United loanee’s manager praises 19-yo maestro as “outstanding”, he can save Amorim £100m

Manchester United youngster Jack Moorhouse produced an brilliant performance for Leyton Orient as the loanee helped his adopted side beat Peterborough 3-1 on Tuesday night, according to his new manager.

A season-long loan

Moorhouse, 19, signed a new contract with the Red Devils this summer, putting pen to paper on a three-deal with the option of a further twelve months.

But the plan remained for the midfielder to spend this season on loan – at a club further down the footballing pyramid – to continue his development away from Old Trafford.

Leyton Orient won a red-hot race to sign the youngster with a host of clubs across England expressing interest.

Moorhouse completed the switch to Brisbane road at the beginning of August, making his debut for the O’s in a 1-0 defeat to Wycombe in the EFL Cup two weeks later.

The box-to-box midfielder is “very highly thought” of at Old Trafford and considered one of the “best ball carries” across England’s youth system, according to an academy expert.

And it was this attribute which shone through in the victory over Peterborough in the Football League Trophy – with O’s manager Richie Wellens describing Moorhouse as  “outstanding” in the 3-1 win.

An “outstanding” performance

Despite going a man down after just 26 minutes as Azeem Abdulai saw red, Orient ran out 3-1 winners over their League One rivals.

Moorhouse was superb in central midfield, scoring an excellently taken goal to put the O’s 2-1 up, before a third in the 68th minute from Michael Craig put the tie to bed.

But his all-round performance was even better, as the statistics below demonstrate, in difficult circumstances for any midfielder.

Speaking after the match, Wellens was effusive in his praise of Moorhouse, predicting the Carrington graduate can become a “top, top player.”

“Jack Moorhouse has taken his time a little bit, [but] today you see… he could potentially be a top, top player,” Wellens, a former United academy player himself, stated.

“When you take a player like that, you’re always worried about second balls, physicality but we need to [think about] what’s he brilliant at…he’s brilliant at getting on the ball deep and making things happen. I thought he was outstanding.”

Moorhouse’s strongest attribute is his ability to drive through midfield with the ball at his feet, as he demonstrated with his goal on Tuesday.

It is a rare attribute as it requires a potent pairing of athleticism and technique, but a deadly one, as it can produce a transition out of nowhere.

Out of the current cohort of midfielders at Old Trafford, only Kobbie Mainoo possesses the skill to beat his opposite number in the middle of the pitch. But the 20-year-old England international does not have the physicality to drive away from them, while Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes lack both.

Amorim has been chasing a “dynamic midfielder” all summer, but there may already be one on the books at Old Trafford – he’ll be just over 200 miles south of Manchester for the next ten months.
