“They haven’t addressed”: United legend pinpoints key problem with former club’s transfer window

Manchester United have started the 2025/2026 season in mixed fashion.

Busy summer

The Red Devils brought in three attacking players Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko to bolster the forward line.

Goalkeeper Senne Lammens was also signed from Royal Antwerp after the horror show performances of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir this season.

Paul Scholes not a fan

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes has critiqued his old club’s summer activity whilst speaking on Sky Sports’ The Overlap show.

Commenting on United’ summer recruitment he stated, “we talk about recruitment and United haven’t addressed the areas which needed addressing. They needed to address the midfield – the legs were never in there.”

Scholes also took fire at Ruben Amorim’s team selections by stating, “Amorim has got four or five midfield players, and he wants to play two of them, but he can’t get it right, he can’t get the combination right.”

Thoughts on Amorim

United sit ninth in the fledgling Premier League table, two points off the top five with four points from a possible nine.

Nonetheless, they were embarrassingly knocked out of the Carabao Cup by fourth division Grimsby Town and the pressure has continued to ramp up on United’s head coach Ruben Amorim.

Commenting on Amorim Scholes added, “I quite like Amorim. He’s very honest and can be too honest. He’s saying what every manager probably thinks at some point, but I don’t think you say that out loud.”

He elaborated, “there are so many experienced managers in the Premier League who will be thinking that, and I’ve thought that, but they won’t say it.”

Scholes then stated that Amorim’s comments after the Carabao cup defeat were most troubling for him.

He explained, “the worst comment for me was after the Grimsby game, where he said that the players spoke out loud – I thought that was a little bit damning for him.”

United have the chance to build on their 3-2 win over Burnley after the international break when they make the short trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City in what will be a vital clash.
