The players Erik ten Hag could sign as Manchester United manager – Manchester Evening News

Erik ten Hag is reportedly one of the candidates under consideration to take over at Old Trafford if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sacked by United.

Following back-to-back defeats at Old Trafford to fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, Solskjaer’s position as United boss is under severe scrutiny.

United stood by Solskjaer after the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool, but rumours of potential candidates to replace him have sparked again after a dismal display against City, with other Premier League clubs taking action by sacking their managers following poor results.

Erik ten Hag has a brilliant record as Ajax manager, picking up an average of 2.33 points per game in his 184 games in charge of the Dutch side, along with his reputation of being able to get the best out of players through his tactics and coaching methods.

So, who would ten Hag sign if he replaced Solskjaer as United boss? And, who would he sell?

We used Football Manager 2022 to find out…

Manchester United’s transfers with Erik ten Hag as manager To find out who Ten Hag would sign, we used popular football management game Football Manager 2022 to simulate the 2021/22 January transfer window and 2022/23 summer transfer window.

We went into the Football Manager 2022 editor, added in Ten Hag as United manager, and gave him full responsibility for United’s incoming and outgoing transfers.

Erik ten Hag’s in-game profile on FM22. Here are all the transfers he was involved in for Manchester United, including both incomings and outgoings.

After appointing Ten Hag in November 2021, the 51-year-old elected not to sign anyone in the 2022 January transfer window, but there were plenty of incoming and outgoings in the summer of 2022.

Summer 2022 transfers in: £241million

Franck Kessie for AC Milan Franck Kessie – AC Milan – £47million rising to £67million

Dodo – Shakhtar – £48million rising to £65million

Pedro Goncalves – Sporting CP – £51million

Noussair Mazraoui – Ajax – £33.5million

Teun Koopmeiners – Atalanta – £17.25million rising to £26.5million

Jesus Corona – FC Porto – Free

Erik ten Hag’s incoming transfers at Manchester United. Erik ten Hag focused his transfer business on strengthening the midfield of Man United, with his marquee signing being AC Milan’s Franck Kessie, a player who has immense physical attributes paired with the energy and technical ability to play in a deeper midfield role for United.

In real-life, Kessie’s contract at Milan is coming to an end next summer and could be obtained for a knockdown price in January but in this FM simulation, the midfielder signed a new deal at the club hence the high fee in the summer.

The Dutchman also raided his former side Ajax, bringing Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui to Old Trafford to improve his midfield and defensive options with players who possess bags of potential and ability.

The 51-year-old brought in a mix of youth and experience with Jesus Corona joining on a free transfer, a player who can play any position down the right wing, along with the likes of Atalanta’s enforcer Teun Koopmeiners and young talents Pedro Goncalves and Dodo.

Summer 2022 transfers out: £132million

Erik ten Hag’s outgoing transfers at Manchester United. Erik ten Hag was very clear with his intentions in who he wanted to move out of the club, as Paul Pogba returned to Juventus for £70million due to the ten Hag’s incoming midfield signings.

Brandon Williams and Aaron Wan-Bissaka also left the club due to the arrival of Dodo, Mazraoui and Corona signalling a change in personnel in the full-back positions. Fred was moved on to ten Hag’s former side Ajax to replace Gravenberch with the Dutch midfielder following ten Hag to Old Trafford.

This is what the United XI looked like at the start of the 2022/23 season, with Ten Hag as manager…

United’s lineup under ten Hag. 4-2-3-1: De Gea; Dodo, Varane, Maguire, Mazraoui; Gravenberch, Kessie; Sancho, Fernandes, Goncalves; Ronaldo.

Erik ten Hag opted not to make any changes to the squad in his first transfer window, instead, waiting for the summer transfer window to shake the United team up and bring in players that fit his profile and play style.

The departure of Paul Pogba was a surprise to many, showing ten Hag wasn’t afraid to move on star players if they did not fit his philosophy, as the Dutch manager brought in seven players for a combined total of £240million.

New fullbacks, new defensive midfielders and a new winger all replaced the likes of Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, and Luke Shaw in the starting lineup, with Donny van de Beek still unable to earn a starting place due to Gravenberch and Kessie joining the club.
