The final countdown: how clever INEOS turned United’s summer transfer budget into a success story – report

Manchester United have enjoyed an eventful summer transfer window, investing heavily in squad reinforcements. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko were roped in to forge a new-look attack.

The Red Devils also signed Diego Leon to add more cover at left-back. Meanwhile, Senne Lammens arrived on Transfer Deadline Day to give Ruben Amorim more options between the sticks.

However, the focus has also been on offloading the deadwood this summer, with the Portuguese head coach keen to further streamline the squad he took over in November last year.

According to reports, United have raised approximately £89m from transfer fees this summer, including loan deals and permanent exits. The Premier League giants have apparently saved around £68m in annual wages as well from those departures.

Alejandro Garnacho is United’s biggest sale this summer

The Alejandro Garnacho saga finally ended over the weekend when Chelsea secured his signature for a reported £40m fee.

United also have a 10% sell-on clause in the deal, so the move could pay further dividends in the future.

Meanwhile, after a summer of speculation, Antony was sold to Real Betis for approximately £19m. The English giants, interestingly, have included a 50% sell-on clause in the deal.

Rasmus Hojlund’s temporary move to Napoli has helped raise around £5m in loan fees as well. The Serie A side also have an obligation to buy him permanently next summer for £38m.

United earned more than £20m from sell-on clauses this summer

United’s decision to include sell-on clauses in deals for former players Alvaro Carreras, Antony Elanga, Maxi Oyedele, and Mason Greenwood has helped them raise around £21m this summer.

They also picked up an easy £5m from Chelsea when they opted out of an obligation to buy Jadon Sancho this summer. The Englishman has joined Aston Villa on loan on Transfer Deadline Day, with Villa reportedly agreeing to cover 80% of his wages.

The departures of Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans, who retired, have helped save around £17m in annual wages.

Meanwhile, Barcelona will pay Marcus Rashford’s entire salary during his loan spell, while they also have an option to buy the player for £26-30m next summer.
