Erik ten Hag praised his side’s character to battle back and win against Forest

It’s going to be a busy end to the transfer window for Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag wants to sign a new left-back after injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. The Dutchman is interested in Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella, but the Blues want a £7million loan fee. Nicolas Tagliafico of Lyon is another option.

Ten Hag is also after a new midfielder, with Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat at the top of his shortlist. Another option is Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is thought to be worth around £30m. Yet Spurs will be concerned about selling to a direct rival.

Shaw injury update

Luke Shaw is expected to be out for ten weeks underlining Manchester United’s need to find a new left-back.

The England international was injured in the recent defeat at Tottenham and is expected to be sidelined for a prolonged period, leaving Erik ten Hag short defensively.

That motivated their pursuit of Sergio Reguilon, who will make a loan move to Old Trafford.

Shaw started 30 times for United in the Premier League last term, filling in on the flanks and as a makeshift centre-half. He will leave a sizeable hole and the Manchester outfit have agreed a loan deal for the Tottenham man with a medical due to take place.

The club have a break clause which they can trigger come January with no purchase option included in the deal whilst they will cover Reguilon’s entire salary.

The youngster has failed to make a senior league appearance since progressing through the academy ranks for United. And Mengi is now poised to bring his time at the club to an end amid transfer interest from the Hatters, who have been seeking defensive reinforcements for weeks.

Henderson move undermines Solskjaer claims

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer raised eyebrows two years ago when he, while Manchester United manager, claimed he had “two number one goalkeepers” in David de Gea and Dean Henderson.

The comments sparked plenty of debate over whether it would be wise to have two ‘keepers he deemed of a starting quality battling it out for the one spot. Solskjaer seemed to encourage the idea of Henderson pushing De Gea as close as possible and publicly warned the Spaniard that the younger Englishman had more than enough talent to be relied upon.

United are losing both men in the same window, though. De Gea left on a free earlier in the summer, while Henderson will command a fee with his Crystal Palace switch.

United warned off double swoop

Manchester United have been told not to make a late double signing of Marc Cucurella and Ryan Gravenberch by former Red Devils defender Mikael Silvestre.

Erik ten Hag’s men have been linked with both of the aforementioned players, though it remains unclear which position the Dutchman views as a priority – left-back or central midfield.

For the majority of the window, United have been linked with a central midfielder, though the first choice of both the Red Devils fanbase and hierarchy was believed to be Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat.

FULL STORY: Van de Beek’s second thoughts

Donny van de Beek is reluctant to join FC Lorient on loan and is ready to wait for alternative options to present themselves ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

Van de Beek, 26, is one of a handful of fringe players who are free to leave Manchester United before the window shuts. The Dutchman had initially struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford since joining the club from Ajax back in 2020 and his fortunes haven’t improved since the arrival of Erik ten Hag last summer.

The Red Devils accepted a proposal from Lorient for Van de Beek earlier this week, however, the midfielder is not sold on the idea of joining the Ligue 1 outfit.

Will Varane injury force a transfer?

Raphael Varane will be out of action for “a few weeks” after picking up an injury against Nottingham Forest, and this appears to have accelerated a push to hand Jonny Evans a one-year deal.

Will there be more to come, though? United are already without Luke Shaw, who has filled in at centre-back in the past.

One solution might be ensuring any left-back recruit is also capable of stepping in in the middle, something which targets Marc Cucurella and Nico Taglafico have done at times in their careers.

Man Utd midfielder Donny van de Beek has no intention of joining Lorient, according to Le Parisien (via Get French Football News).
