Ten Hag addresses Wout Weghorst performance and praises ‘unstoppable’ teammate

Erik ten Hag has commented on the performances of his forwards after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Barcelona.

The performances followed the pattern of what we have seen in recent weeks, with Marcus Rashford continuing his terrific goalscoring streak, while Wout Weghorst failed to hit the back of the net once again.

Weghorst is stuck on just one goal for United, missing a clear cut chance in the first half at the Nou Camp.

Erik ten Hag addressed Weghorst’s performance in his post-match press conference, reported by the club website.

Ten Hag began by praising Marcus Rashford, who struck his 22nd goal of the season in the draw, and affirmed his belief Weghorst will score goals.

The Dutchman said: “He is so unstoppable at this moment, such a high belief for scoring goals, which we are happy with of course. But credit to the team as they get him every time in the right position.

“As I said before, we have other players who can score – Bruno, Jadon can score as well. Wout, of course, and they will score.”

Further commenting on Weghorst, Ten Hag explained he regarded the Dutchman as a key part of his tactical plan, kicking off by using him in a deeper role, and felt he was useful for the team.

He said: “It’s not only about Wout, but he did well in that position, and I know he can be, but it gives us a lot of variation, but also you know I want Jadon and Bruno coming in the half spaces, get them on the ball and make runs from both from deep.

“The full-backs joining in made a lot of variation and we had a lot of opportunities and we should have won this game.”

The manager also spoke about the enthralling game and his desire for United to go and win the second leg at Old Trafford.

He said: “I really enjoyed the game a lot. In the end, 2-2, and we have to finish it at Old Trafford.”

United were left feeling unlucky not to get the win. Marcus Rashford told BT Sport after the game that the draw felt like a defeat. Next week he will get a chance to put it right.
