Tactical analysis: three points against Wolves should be guaranteed if United just implement these two key decisions

Following a frustrating draw with West Ham United, Manchester United have a golden opportunity to return to form as they face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League this evening. While Man United have dropped points unnecessarily against weaker opponents on several occasions this season, West Ham included, they should have no trouble dispatching Wolves, given their incredibly poor season to date. In 14 league games so far this season, Wolves have failed to register a single win, obtaining just two points throughout their entire campaign. Surely, this match should be nothing short of a guaranteed win for United. Still, before any premature celebrations take place, Ruben Amorim must ensure that his team implement the following tactics to avoid what would be a most disappointing loss or draw if they don’t keep their finger on the pulse. No more complacency After opening the scoring against West Ham early in the second half, United took their foot off the gas, allowing the visitors to hit back despite the match being so one-sided throughout. United legend Roy Keane was furious, slamming his former club for not only failing to put the game away but also allowing the visitors the freedom to find a way back into the match. For West Ham to come away with a point was ludicrous given United’s dominance, with the hosts bombarding their opponents’ defence with 17 shots while retaining 65% possession. (Sofascore) Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear just how United eased up after scoring the opener in the 58th minute. They took just six shots after the goal, with the other 11 attempts coming earlier in the match. In contrast, West Ham remained consistent, taking five of their 11 shots after Diogo Dalot’s goal. While one less than United’s tally after the 58th minute, it’s important to remember that West Ham made far better use of the ball given their limited possession. Should United grab the lead against Wolves, they must not grow complacent. Rather, they need to double down and search for more goals in order to seal the win. Defensive composure is key On paper, this should be the easiest match for United’s defence to handle to date. In 14 games, Wolves have scored just seven goals. To put it into perspective, that’s just one goal every two games. Still, this doesn’t give United the leeway to simply switch off. Several United defenders have been far from their best in recent times. While Leny Yoro appeared jaded in the Crystal Palace match, even giving away a penalty, Dalot and Luke Shaw have been underwhelming to say the least. For this reason, it is crucial for Amorim to select a defensive lineup that will remain on high alert and get the job done at the Molineux Stadium tonight. This will require Amorim to carefully curate his defence around players who have been showing energy and focus in training. After all, anything less than three points tonight would be unacceptable as United look to return to the summit of European football.
