Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United remains fragile following the club’s acquisition of Senne Lammens. The Cameroonian custodian started the season behind Altay Bayindir in the pecking order.
Onana has divided opinion since arriving from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023. The 29 year old was in the spotlight once again after a disappointing 2024/25 season, where he conceded 65 goals in 50 games.
With Bayindir not asserting confidence either in the opening two games against Arsenal and Fulham, Onana was back between the sticks against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup. However, the former Ajax man had a night to forget, letting in two easy goals as his team were dumped out of the tournament on penalties.
Bayindir was reinstated in goal last weekend against Burnley and it appears that Onana is behind the Turkey international in the pecking order at the moment. However, the Cameroonian’s future has been further complicated after United secured the signature of Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day.
Onana was linked with an exit from Old Trafford this summer, but ended up staying.
Onana’s relationship with Amorim not impacted by recent changes
Despite losing his place at Old Trafford, Onana’s relationship with Ruben Amorim remains good, according to Fabrizio Romano.
In his column for GIVEMESPORT, the Italian journalist added that the Portuguese head coach expects high standards from all his players.
“Still a good relationship. Amorim is very clear, who wants to play must perform at the best level. It’s for Onana and for all the others,” wrote Romano.
Lammens has been handed the No. 31 shirt at Old Trafford.
United have an overload of goalkeepers in the squad
United now have four goalkeepers in their roster, with veteran custodian Tom Heaton also in the mix. Lammens will definitely have his eyes on the No. 1 role, although it is believed that Onana is ready to fight for his place in the starting XI as well.
However, Amorim could look to be patient with the Belgian instead. The Portuguese has deployed a similar approach with Benjamin Sesko, who has been eased into action at Old Trafford.
While fans would love to see the 23 year old between the stick in the Manchester Derby after the international break, it is unclear if he would be selected for the high-pressure fixture.
Instead, the game against Brentford later this month could mark Lammens’ first appearance for the Red Devils.
