Striker slips through United’s fingers as he agrees deal to join rival PL club – David Ornstein

Manchester United have missed out on free agent striker Callum Wilson, who has completed a move to a rival Premier League club.

Wilson was on United’s radar

It’s well-known that United are on the hunt for a striker, with Ruben Amorim looking to add more firepower to the ranks after a goal-shy 2024/25 season.

United have already bolstered their attacking department with the additions of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford respectively. At the moment, the club’s full transfer focus seems to be on bringing in a striker.

Throughout the window, the Red Devils have been linked to a host of talismans including Wilson.

Wilson parted ways with Newcastle upon the expiry of his contract at the end of June. He spent five seasons at St James’ Park, netting a decent 49 goals in 130 matches.

He won the Carabao Cup during his time with the Magpies.

However, consistently occurring injuries in the last two campaigns prevented Wilson from nailing down a run of games and performances. But, given his Premier League experience and availability, there was a strong case that he could be a smart addition for United, particularly as a back-up striker.

A report covered by The Peoples Person last month relayed that United had been offered the chance to sign Wilson.

Now, the reliable David Ornstein has confirmed that the 33-year-old has agreed to join West Ham.

Wilson to join West Ham

According to Ornstein, “West Ham United have agreed a deal to sign free agent Callum Wilson following his Newcastle United exit.”

“Wilson has completed a medical ahead of signing a one-year deal with the east London club, which is heavily incentive-based.”

“The 33-year-old, who was won nine England caps, left Newcastle at the end of his contract on June 30 after the north east club decided against taking up the option to extend his deal. The parties held talks about a new contract that would have been slightly more incentive-based, but could not reach an agreement.”

If United were considering a late move for Wilson, that window of opportunity has now firmly shut. It’s thought that Amorim’s side remain in pursuit of RB Leipzig Benjamin Sesko.
