“So that’s the dream”: Red-hot United duo reveal the trophy they aim to bring back to Old Trafford

Manchester United last won the Premier League title in the 2012/13 season, which was Sir Alex Ferguson’s last at the helm at Old Trafford. Since the legendary Scot retired, the Red Devils have finished second on a couple of occasions, but have never lifted the league trophy. The English giants have chopped and changed the squad over the years and endured multiple managerial upheavals, but the league has remained out of reach. INEOS have taken several steps to get United back to their heyday and, last November, selected Ruben Amorim as the one to script the return of the glory days to Old Trafford. The Portuguese head coach endured a difficult time last season, overseeing a 15th-placed finish in the league, their lowest since the 1973/74 campaign when the Red Devils were relegated. Signs of a revival this season United’s struggles last season forced INEOS into action over the summer, during which they spent over £200 million on reinforcing the attack and upgrading the goalkeeping position. Although Benjamin Sesko is yet to live up to expectations, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Senne Lammens have all hit the ground running. Subsequently, the Red Devils have shown marked improvement in their performances and now sit seventh in the Premier League table, nine points behind leaders Arsenal. The target this season remains a top-four place, which will enable further squad rebuilding in 2026. While an onslaught on the league cannot be entirely ruled out, it is realistically out of reach at the moment. However, two first-team stars are already dreaming of getting their hands on the coveted trophy. Amad and Mbeumo’s Premier League dream Amad Diallo has forged a stellar partnership with new signing Mbeumo on the right flank this season. Both players remain indispensable to Amorim’s plans, so their departure for the upcoming AFCON is causing a few worries behind the scenes at Old Trafford. The duo recently sat down with Sky Sports for a chat, where they were asked about their target for the next few years. Amad responded: “Honestly, why not winning the league? Why not? Dreaming is possible. So that’s the dream.” When pressed on the matter, Mbeumo echoed his club teammate’s thoughts, stating: “Of course. Yeah, of course. If you come to Manchester United, you want to win titles, and the Premier League is one of them. So, why not?” The Cameroonian is fast becoming United’s new talisman and has scored six goals in 14 appearances to date. He has started every game in the Premier League this season. Final Thoughts Earlier this year, United CEO Omar Berrada reiterated the club’s target of winning the Premier League by 2028, which will also mark their 150th anniversary. The Red Devils still have a few gaps in the squad, with the midfield and wing-back positions remaining a cause for concern. There are also calls to sign an experienced striker to aid Sesko’s development. Should the English giants manage to address these issues in the upcoming transfer windows, there is no reason why they cannot push for the elusive league title soon.
