BACK David Tully Aug 24th 2023 Manchester United have made an “official offer” for Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg. The journalist claims that the Red Devils already have a “verbal agreement” over a five-year contract with the player, who is valued at €15m (£13m): ❗️🆕: Understand that Odysseas #Vlachodimos has received an official offer from ManUtd. He could sign a contract until 2028. ➡️ It’s a verbal agreement in principle ➡️ Price valuation: Around €15m. Ten Hag wants him but there’s no final decision as Altay #Bayindir is also… pic.twitter.com/9l0fd8X7aC — Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) August 24, 2023 As Plettenberg states, it looks as though United are now considering two options as backup for Andre Onana. It was originally believed that the club wanted to buy Fenerbahce’s Altay Bayindir but there were concerns about an injury that prompted the Red Devils to ask for medical checks. Currently, it appears the club are now torn about whether they should pursue Vlachodimos or Bayindir. What do United fans need to know about Vlachodimos? The 29-year-old was born in Germany, so that explains why a German journalist has the inside scoop on this story, but he does play internationally for Greece, having been capped 33 times by his country. Vlachodimos has been Benfica’s first-choice keeper for the last five years, having arrived from Panathinaikos in 2018, but he has fallen out with his manager Roger Schmidt, who has already signed his replacement: Anatoliy Trubin from Shakhtar Donetsk. Bayindir would be the cheaper option If the choice between Vlachodimos and Bayindir comes down to finances, then United will opt for the Turkish international. Bayindir reportedly has a €5m (£4.3m) release clause, which means he would be available for a third of the price. If he does pass his medical, you would bet on the Manchester club signing the 25-year-old, rather than Vlachodimos. David Tully David has worked as a football reporter for the last fifteen years.
