Sir Alex Ferguson names most ‘charismatic’ team he has ever seen live, he does not think there will be another

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has named the most “charismatic” team he has ever seen, despite claiming that there may never be one like them again.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who is regarded as one of the best managers of all time, began his managerial career in Scotland and enjoyed incredible success in his native homeland.

The Manchester United legend had a prolific spell at Scottish side Aberdeen, with Ferguson arriving at the Pittodrie Stadium in 1978 after leaving St Mirren.

Ferguson, who lifted a Scottish First Division title with St Mirren, captured three Scottish Premier Division titles, four Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup with Aberdeen.

The former United boss also achieved one of the biggest feats in his entire career at Aberdeen after he led the Scottish side to the European Cup Winners’ Cup trophy.

Ferguson’s Aberdeen side famously defeated La Liga outfit Real Madrid 2-1 in the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983 in Sweden.

Following his incredible achievements at Aberdeen, Ferguson made his exit from the Pittodrie Stadium and arrived at United in 1986 to replace Ron Atkinson as manager.

Ferguson talks Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt

Speaking to Eintracht Frankfurt’s official website, Sir Alex Ferguson was asked whether or not he attended one of the German side’s matches against Rangers in 1960.

Eintracht Frankfurt steamrolled Rangers 6-1 in the first-leg semi-final tie at the Waldstadion during the 1959-60 European Cup season.

Rangers were defeated again in the return leg at Ibrox Park in Glasgow, with Frankfurt punching their ticket to the final after a 6-3 win.

Sir Alex Ferguson was a Rangers fan growing up, despite later managing Aberdeen and experiencing the heated rivalry first-hand as a coach.

The ex-Aberdeen and Manchester United boss admitted that he was in attendance for the home match between Rangers and Frankfurt in the European Cup.

“It was unbelievable. In the away game, Frankfurt beat the [sic] Rangers six to one,” Ferguson said.

“I was at the home game, when they came to Ibrox, with 70,000 people in attendance.

“Rangers scored first and, of course, you then get hopeful, saying that Rangers could come back. They ended up losing by six again.

“I was a Rangers fan, living only some 200 meters away from Ibrox.”

Man Utd legend Ferguson in awe at one team

Despite their remarkable 12-4 aggregate scoreline win over Rangers, Frankfurt fell short in the final after they suffered a 7-3 defeat to Real Madrid at Hampden Park.

Ferguson also revealed that he went to see the final of the European Cup and was left in awe at the brilliance of the Madrid team at the time.

The iconic Scotsman highlighted the likes of Ferenc Puskas, Alfredo Di Stefano and Paco Gento, with Ferguson calling Madrid the most “charismatic” team he had seen.

“I went to the final in 1960 as well, hoping that Frankfurt would win, since they knocked out Rangers,” he continued.

“I was 17 years old at the time, playing for FC Queens Park. It was an amazing game.

“[Richard] Kreß [Richard Kress] scored the first goal. We said: ‘Wow! A great German team.’ But then there was Puskas, Di Stefano, Gento.

“I don’t think there will ever be another team as charismatic as that Real Madrid team at the time.

“Puskas scored four goals and Stefano scored three. They were fantastic players.

“And the 7-3 was an amazing game. It was no disgrace to lose that game. They proved themselves in the semi-final against Rangers.

“It was unfortunate because it was the fifth final in a row that Real Madrid won.”
