At his best, the Argentine is one of the most technically gifted, no-nonsense, left-footed defenders in world football.
In 2022, beating Arsenal to his signature in a £57 million deal was widely seen as one of the best bits of transfer business that summer.
Although he had a slow start at Old Trafford, he gradually established himself as a key figure in United’s defence.
With him in the side, their backline became one to be envied.
During that season (2022-23), David de Gea claimed the Golden Glove without having to make a single save in nine of United’s 16 clean sheets, highlighting the impact of a reinforced defence.
While many hoped the Argentine would build on his impressive maiden Premier League campaign, injuries ultimately prevented him from doing so.
Over the past two seasons, fitness issues have denied United the full benefit of his brilliance.
He has struggled for consistency, featuring 20 times in the Premier League this season after managing just 11 appearances in 2023-24.
Despite his unquestionable quality, concerns over his availability persist. After all, what good is a player if he is rarely fit?
Amorim not convinced by Martinez
Reports have suggested that head coach Ruben Amorim does not rate him.
According to a report relayed by The Peoples Person in early April, United were keen on signing Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio due to doubts over Martinez’s suitability for a back-three system.
Given those concerns, the former Ajax defender was thought to be one of the players INEOS could look to cash in on.
However, with him sidelined by an ACL injury, such a move seems unlikely this summer.
Interestingly, reports from Italy suggest that if he is made available this summer, he could be headed to Naples.
Napoli adore Martinez
Sport Witness, citing Italian publications Corriere dello Sport and La Repubblica, highlight Napoli’s interest in securing his signature.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the centre-back is both ‘followed’ and ‘liked’ by Antonio Conte’s side, who reportedly have no concerns over his injury record.
They are monitoring his rehabilitation closely while keeping him on their transfer wishlist.
Meanwhile, La Repubblica, as cited by CN24, confirm Martinez is among Napoli’s options to strengthen their defence.
While the potential transfer fee remains unclear, the success of Scott McTominay’s move could serve as an incentive for Napoli to push hard for a deal.
Slowly but surely, Old Trafford seems to be turning into a favourable shopping destination for the Italian champions.
