Seething Amorim shares his “feeling” after limp United defeat, it should set alarm bells ringing for fans

Manchester United’s recent resurgence came to a juddering halt in unlikely circumstances as ten-man Everton grabbed a rare victory at Old Trafford. Shoddy performance Idrissa Gueye was sent off early on in bizarre circumstances after slapping team mate and former United man Michael Keane. It should have teed the hosts up for a victory to take them into fifth place, but instead they shipped a goal and were utterly toothless in their search for an equaliser. Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, a furious Ruben Amorim slammed his side’s efforts. “They were the better team with 11 players and ten. I felt we were not there with the same intensity, they deserved the win,” he said. The head coach continued: “The other team helped us with the sending off. We need to do [more] in every moment. If they have ten let’s push them to the final third. We need to do more.” Backwards step United went into the game as buoyant as they ever have been under Amorim, unbeaten in five matches and looking slightly more assured in front of goal. But despite taking 25 shots they failed to get past a resolute Everton defence, and their inefficacy and general play has Amorim worried. Asked if the loss felt like a step back the Portuguese simply answered “yes”. He continued: “Especially in the way we played the game, forget the result. “The result is really bad but U was more concerned by the feeling I had during the game.” Players feeling Amorim’s wrath After blasting his players by saying “everyone should play better today”, Amorim answered the question of what he said to his players after the game in ominous words. “Nothing,” he said. “We have training tomorrow. We’ll deal with it tomorrow.” Unusually for the latest incarnation of Amorim’s United the players at times looked off the pace and lacking intensity. The Portuguese is sure to make his dissatisfaction known, and hopefully the silent treatment he has dealt out will help inspire, rather than dispirit, his squad.
