Manchester United have decided to continue with Erik Ten Hag for the new campaign after an end-season review despite mismanagement and lack of positive results. The club board are negotiating a new deal with the Dutchman as his current contract expires next June, with a 12-month provision to extend.

Ten Hag has felt the support of INEOS after winning the F.A. Cup by defeating neighbourhood rivals Manchester City and he remains keen on rebuilding the team. The potential appointment of Van Nistelrooy is a major part of the extension discussions as a return to Old Trafford is firmly on the cards for him.

Burnley have progressed talks with the 47-year-old for their head coach position but if United arrive with a confident approach, he is expected to say ‘yes’ to the proposal.
