Atalanta defender Cristian Romero is said to be ‘pushing’ for a transfer, amid reports that Tottenham Hotspur have finally agreed a deal for the Argentine.
The 23-year-old has seemingly emerged as Spurs‘ top centre-back target this summer, having enjoyed a fine season for both club and country, helping the Serie A side secure Champions League football before going on to play his part in Argentina’s Copa America triumph.
The former Juventus defender – who joined Atalanta, initially on loan, last summer – made 42 appearances in all competitions last term, notably featuring seven times in the club’s run to the Champions League last-16.
With Spurs having seen Toby Alderweireld depart for Qatari side Al-Duhail last week, it would appear that Romero could be the man to replace him, Argentine outlet TyC sports reporting that a deal has been agreed between the two clubs.
The report suggests that Spurs are set to fork out €50m plus €5m bonuses to prize him from Atalanta, the Italian side having only recently agreed to pay the €16m fee to make his loan move permanent.
According to the report, the deal will only be finalised once Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have signed a replacement, with Turkey defender Merih Demiral said to be their main target.
Meanwhile, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has suggested that the Romero deal is not quite done and dusted just yet with talks still ongoing, albeit with the player reportedly pushing for a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The north London club have also been linked with a move for Bologna centre-back Takehiro Tomiyasu, as new boss Nuno Espirito Santo and new managing director Fabio Paratici look to strengthen the backline ahead of the new season.
Central defence has been a problem position for the club in recent seasons, the likes of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez struggling for consistency, while last year’s summer signing Joe Rodon has found game time hard to come by.
