Romano Claims Man Utd “Could” Seal Transfer With £26M Bid For Midfield Target

BACK Atletico Madrid “could” accept a bid worth €30m (£26m) for Man Utd transfer target Conor Gallagher, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils have held an interest in the England international for several months, but they have only been prepared to loan the player up until now. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said Atletico would prefer a sale: “Manchester United were interested in Conor Gallagher as an opportunity in the final days of August, but Atletico said no to a loan move and they don’t have that kind of intention.” “I think if maybe a permanent transfer proposal arrives, that would be different. Maybe something around 30 million euros (£26m), sources say that this could be the way to get Conor Gallagher in the January transfer window.” Gallagher is “not satisfied” with the minutes he’s getting Chelsea sold the midfielder to Atletico for £34m in the summer of 2024, and he has spent the best part of 18 months in Spain. Even though Gallagher says he is “very happy” at his current club, he did admit in an interview last month that he was “not satisfied” with his game time. He is keen to have a bigger role. Atletico head coach Diego Simeone has only started the 25-year-old three times in the league so far this season. Man Utd have several midfield targets While Gallagher may well be the cheapest option available ahead of the January transfer window, he is by no means the only midfielder under consideration. Wolves’ Joao Gomes is also on the club’s radar, while the likes of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba have been linked as well. Although Gomes could be signed for around £44m, the other three names may cost in excess of £100m. Those prices may make a move for Gallagher more appetising.
