Rodgers to United: Interest noted as Leicester boss tipped for Old Trafford

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under huge pressure at Manchester United.

Almost three years into the job, the former centre-forward has yet to deliver silverware and despite being handsomely backed in the transfer window ahead of the current campaign, the Red Devils look a long way off challenging for the title.

Unsurprisingly there is a lot of speculation around Solskjaer’s position and although the MEN understands the club considered sacking him after the 5-0 loss to Liverpool, for now he remains in place.

One of the names mentioned as a possible successor is Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers and the MEN understands he has admirers at Old Trafford.

Here are all the latest details around the former Liverpool boss and a possible move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Rodgers ‘well regarded’ by United figures (November 8)

Richard Fay has reported that Solskjaer is increasingly at risk of losing his job and Rodgers is one of the names in the frame to come in.

In the report, it’s suggested that a change of manager this season feels “inevitable”, although United are said to be keen to line up a successor before wielding the axe.

“Solskjaer, 46, only signed a three-year contract in July and while some at the club still believe he needs more time to turn things around other sources believe United are only delaying the inevitable by giving him longer in the role.

“United passed on the chance to appoint Antonio Conte as their new coach before he took charge of Tottenham, while Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers is well regarded by the club despite his links with fierce rivals Liverpool.”

Latest odds to replace Solskjaer (November 8)

Grosvenor Sport currently has Rodgers as the heavy favourite to replace Solskjaer should United decide to make a change.

The Northern Irishman is 6/4 with the bookmakers with former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane at 6/1 and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino a 7/1 shout.

Impressive Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is fourth in the market at 11/1, while current Everton head coach and former Liverpool chief Rafael Benitez is remarkably as short as 25/1 to take charge at Old Trafford.

Rodgers ‘tired’ of speculation (October 31)

When asked about possible links with a move to United previously, Rodgers said he was a little fed up with the speculation.

“I don’t even think about it – and that’s the brutal honesty,” he said.

“I’m sure the supporters are probably tired of it. At Leicester, there is always a link. My focus is always here with Leicester and developing the football club on to that next level, where you’re competing for European football and challenging for honours.”
