Robert Lewandowski has said that he discussed a transfer to Manchester United with legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, as speculation over a move to England intensifies.

The 32-year-old reportedly wants to leave Bayern Munich for a fresh challenge, handing several Premier League clubs a new option in their striker pursuits.

Manchester City have prioritised signing an elite goalscorer after securing the record-break £100million transfer for Jack Grealish a fortnight ago.

Boss Pep Guardiola lost club icon Sergio Aguero to Barcelona when his contract expired at the end of June and wishes to replace a player who scored a staggering 260 goals in 10 years.

The Premier League champions have targeted Harry Kane but are finding negotiations with Tottenham difficult. Spurs do not want to sell the England captain, especially to a top-flight rival.

Spurs might be tempted to do so now that a genuine alternative has arrived on the market.

Sky Sports report that Lewandowski wants to play for another top club before he turns 35. The Poland star has his 33rd birthday on Saturday.

The story continues that Bayern would not accept anything below £100m for the attacker, who scored 56 goals for club and country last season.

Man Utd could also be looking for a striker next summer when Edinson Cavani’s contract expires. Lewandowski has explained that he discussed a transfer with ex-coach Ferguson following his first season at Borussia Dortmund in 2010/11.

“After my second year in Dortmund, I had a conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson,” Lewandowski told France Football in December 2020.

“He wanted me to come to Manchester.

“I was very interested. I can even say I was ready. But Dortmund didn’t want to let me go. It didn’t upset me more than that because things were going well with Borussia.”

United could get their man 10 years later, similar to their recent transfer for Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Cavani signed a new one-year deal at Old Trafford in the hope that a new striker could be signed next summer.

Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland is believed to be of interest but the Norwegian will be in strong demand in 2022 when a reduced £64m price tag becomes active in his contract.

Lewandowski also revealed that Arsenal star Thierry Henry was his idol when he was growing up.

Arsenal are believed to be interested in signing a striker.

Lewandowski continued: “The ones I admired were Alessandro Del Piero and Thierry Henry, even Roberto Baggio, whom I saw playing when I was very young.

“But, as much as the big names, what made me dream were the big stadiums and their atmospheres.”

Lewandowski’s Bayern contract expires in the summer of 2023.

He has started the new season with three goals in his first two appearances, including helping the Bavarians win the German Cup.
