Rio Ferdinand shares his first reaction to one of Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd signings, he admits he fumbled big time

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has admitted that he made a U-turn on one Erik ten Hag signing after he felt the club went “backwards” with the transfer.

Erik ten Hag, who is in his second season at Manchester United, reinforced his squad options heavily last summer ahead of the current Premier League campaign.

The Dutchman’s signings included the arrival of Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund, who was brought to Old Trafford for a whopping £72m fee from Atalanta.

Erik ten Hag was reunited with former Ajax star Andre Onana after United signed the Cameroon international from Inter Milan in a deal worth £47.2m.

Altay Bayindir was also snapped up from Turkish side Fenerbahce, while Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat both arrived at Old Trafford on loan.

Among the different signings brought to United, Ten Hag saw the likes of David de Gea, Dean Henderson and Anthony Elanga exit Old Trafford last summer.

However, Rio Ferdinand has insisted that one United signing last summer stands out for him more positively after he initially saw the transfer negatively.

Ferdinand makes U-turn on Man Utd signing

Erik ten Hag added much-needed experience to his Manchester United backline after Rio Ferdinand’s former teammate Jonny Evans returned to Old Trafford.

Jonny Evans, who had come through the United youth academy, left Leicester City last summer and signed a short-term deal with the Red Devils after his release.

The 36-year-old United defender was included in the club’s pre-season tour and impressed Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag on his return to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils made the surprise decision to award a one-year contract to Evans last September, with the United star making his mark this season for the club.

Evans has featured regularly in the United first team under Ten Hag and the former Leicester City and West Brom skipper has made 18 Premier League appearances.

The United centre-back has been a reliable option for Ten Hag, with the former Ajax boss turning to Evans amid the injuries to his players this season.

Ferdinand, who played alongside Evans at Old Trafford before his retirement, has revealed his reaction when his former teammate signed for the Red Devils.

“He’s been arguably our best defender this year and that says a lot,” he told Cool FM News in Northern Ireland.

“When he first signed, and even though he’s my mate and I played with him, I was like: ‘Flippin’ hell, how are we signing Jonny at this time?! Are we going backwards?’”

Ferdinand on Evans’ Man Utd performances

Ferdinand has spoken highly of Evans’ impact at Old Trafford this season, with the United legend even amazed at one area in which his ex-teammate has improved.

Evans is out of contract this summer with United, but the Northern Ireland international could receive a new deal after his performances this season.

Ferdinand admired how Evans, who was initially axed from United in 2015, has reintegrated himself at the Red Devils and done what was asked of him on his return.

The 45-year-old former England and United defender added that Evans’ regular playing time this season is a “testament to him as a professional footballer.”

“But he’s come in and when he has been asked to do a job, he’s done it really, really well,” Ferdinand continued.

“I was with him the other day at the training ground and he has surprised himself in terms of the amount of game time he’s had, but then you’ve got to go out there and produce and play.

“That’s [a] testament to him as a professional footballer as well because you’ve got to prepare yourself and you’ve got to be ready for those moments, and he has been so good luck to him.”
