Report: Sir Alex Ferguson supports potential Manchester United appointment amid Rio Ferdinand doubts

Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman has the support of Sir Alex Ferguson amid links with a move to Manchester United.

Whilst United fans are waiting for confirmation of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment, the attention is already turning to potential big moves.

Ratcliffe is expected to prioritise the appointment of a sporting director with United’s football operations set to be overhauled.

Many names have been linked with the job and it looks like Sir Alex Ferguson is backing one potential appointment…

Dougie Freedman has become a surprise link in the hunt for a new sporting director.

The Daily Star reported over the weekend that United have a real interest in luring Freedman away from Crystal Palace.

The Telegraph now claim that Freedman has one very influential figure in his corner – Sir Alex Ferguson.

It’s claimed that Ferguson is a keen admirer of his fellow Scot and the pair were even neighbours in Cheshire.

MORE UNITED STORIES

Ratcliffe will lean on Ferguson for advice about United’s new era and he would seemingly back Freedman for the sporting director job.

Freedman even beat Ferguson’s United in the EFL Cup back in 2011, claiming a 2-1 win at Old Trafford before spending time with Sir Alex in his office, according to The Telegraph.

Rio Ferdinand has a very different view on Freedman rumours

Freedman has done some fine work at Palace, signing the likes of Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi.

Add in Michael Olise, Joachim Andersen and the loan arrival of Conor Gallagher and Freedman has been impressive.

Ferguson may be a fan of Freedman but Rio Ferdinand doesn’t seem quite as convinced.

Ferdinand suggested earlier this week that the Freedman rumours have ‘come out of left field’ and doesn’t think Palace’s recruitment has been good enough to put him in contention for United.

Ferguson’s advice will seemingly carry real weight but Freedman would no doubt have a number of doubters if United do strike a deal.
