Kobbie Mainoo has been a revelation in midfield this season for Manchester United; now he’s on the verge of international football.
Since making his debut toward the back end of 2023, Kobbie Mainoo has probably been the best midfielder at Erik ten Hag‘s disposal. The 18-year-old has only gone from strength to strength for Manchester United as he’s now virtually undroppable.
The talented midfielder has improved even more since he has been partnered with Casemiro, which has seen him awarded a further license to roam. This has seen Mainoo score twice in his last four games, with one being an absolute world-class finish.
Played primarily however as a six, now it’s being suggested that Mainoo’s future lies further forward.
Kobbie Mainoo viewed as a more attacking midfielder by Gareth Southgate
According to an exclusive report by Mail Online, England manager Gareth Southgate sees Mainoo as more of an attacking midfield player, with his profile compared to other English midfielders.
Mainoo is a player who has phenomenally begun his career controlling games from deep for United. But Southgate isn’t viewing Mainoo as a Declan Rice or Kalvin Phillips-type player.
Instead, Southgate has Mainoo in the same bracket as the likes of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden, which will no doubt surprise some United supporters.

Undoubtedly, Mainoo owns the technical quality which is required to play further forward and has already shown he has a scoring touch, but it’s difficult to imagine him playing a role different to where he is now.
Mainoo’s attitude has also been praised recently outside of just his brilliant ability with Rio Ferdinand saying that the midfielder’s hunger is among his best qualities.
Will Kobbie Mainoo be called up by England?
Mainoo has two options for his international career, one of which is England while the other is Ghana. The report also mentions that the starlet is keeping his options open over which nation he’ll declare for.
If Southgate was to offer Mainoo a call-up for next month’s fixtures the belief is that he’d accept and with growing interest from Southgate, it looks more and more likely this happens.
Southgate has shown in the past that he’s prepared to offer players caps early on, in order to secure talented wonderkids to England.
Mainoo has represented England at under 16, under 18 and under 19 level and so it’s more than likely he sees his future there.
