Report: Arsenal join Manchester United in race to sign ‘fantastic’ Copa America winger

Manchester United are looking far and wide for new signings and may even look into the Championship for new recruits this summer.

The transfer window is surely about to accelerate.

July is upon us, the PSR deadline has passed and both Euro 2024 and Copa America are set to reach their conclusions in the coming days.

Pre-season action will be upon us soon enough and managers up and down the country will be desperate to make new signings ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Manchester United are no different; Erik ten Hag needs new additions having been handed another chance to shine as United boss.

Deals for Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt appear to be moving in the right direction for United but other targets may be a little trickier to land.

Arsenal join Manchester United in Yaser Asprilla race

United are looking for players to make an immediate impact in Ten Hag’s first-team squad.

Zirkzee may not be the finished product but he can seriously help Rasmus Hojlund whilst De Ligt would walk into the United back line.

United may also have one eye on talents for the future though, especially from leagues in which the club doesn’t usually shop.

That is the impact of Dan Ashworth; he showed a real desire to shop in ‘unfashionable’ markets during his time at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Ashworth will certainly know all about Championship talents and one appears to have already been on United’s radar – even before Ashworth’s arrival was officially confirmed.

Colombian reporter Guillermo Arango claimed in June that United were in the race to sign Watford talent Yaser Asprilla.

The 20-year-old winger – who can also play as a number 10 – hit six goals and seven assists in the Championship last term.

The reports suggested that Brighton, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Bologna, Real Betis and Real Sociedad are also interested in signing Asprilla.

Hailed as a ‘fantastic’ talent by Jake Livermore, Asprilla could be one for the future in United’s eyes – but there is real competition for his signature.

The Sunday Mirror (07/07, p72) report that Asprilla is now wanted by Arsenal and Everton too as he features for Colombia at Copa America.

It’s suggested that Watford may cash in for around £15million this summer with the Gunners seemingly taking a liking to Asprilla too.

Mikel Arteta could view Asprilla as cover and competition for Bukayo Saka down the right flank, leaving United in a real battle for a potential deal this summer.

Zirkzee stance gives United some hope

Arsenal are certainly appealing right now, even if it will sting for some United fans to accept.

The Gunners are going for the Premier League title once again after twice narrowly missing out to Manchester City.

Arsenal are on the rise, have top young talents across the pitch and can offer Champions League football – something United can’t match right now.

Still, United are a major pull for players and that has been summed up by Bologna striker Zirkzee.

Reports suggest that Zirkzee is wanted by Arsenal but has decided to take the stance of rejecting a move to North London in favour of choosing United.

That shows how United can still challenge Arsenal for signings and it will inspire some hope that Asprilla can be lured to Old Trafford even if the Gunners make a move.

We would be surprised to see Asprilla – a left-footed wide man – arrive this summer though, unless Amad Diallo is leaving the club.

Asprilla may just be a player on United’s radar for future windows, but he is a name to keep in mind just in case United move for another winger.
