BACK Manchester United have a “strong chance” of signing Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, according to TEAMtalk. The website claims that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has a “genuine belief” that the Uruguayan international can be snapped up this summer. Araujo is a key player for Barca but, due to the La Liga side’s financial situation, it is believed that the centre-back will be sold if they receive a fee in the region of £85m. TEAMtalk claim that two conditions will have to be met for the deal to go ahead. Barcelona are keen to have at least 75% of the transfer fee paid upfront, while they will also demand first refusal on Bruno Fernandes if the club captain ever leaves Old Trafford. Ratcliffe is reportedly willing to “open talks” over a deal for Araujo but it is not known whether he will accept the terms that Barca have proposed. United will have to see off interest from rival Premier League teams It was reported last week that Chelsea had spoken to intermediaries of Araujo, along with United. Newcastle have also been mentioned as potential suitors. With Chelsea and Newcastle both likely to have issues with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, though, it remains to be seen whether they are willing to spend the sort of money needed to secure the 25-year-old’s signature. Alternative centre-backs targets could be considered Spending £85m on one player may not be seen as a good use of resources by United’s new recruitment team so you can’t rule out the club deciding to pursue cheaper alternatives. Jean-Clair Todibo has been a long-term target for the Red Devils and the Nice defender would cost half the amount of Araujo. Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who reportedly has a £55m asking price, is another name who could be looked at instead. David Tully David has worked as a football reporter for the last fifteen years.
