Players desperate to jump ship in January should be allowed to leave, as pathetic Everton display showed

Manchester United succumbed to a dismal 0-1 defeat at the hands of 10-men Everton at Old Trafford on Monday. It was a difficult week for the hosts, who lost both Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha to injury. That resulted in Ruben Amorim being forced to shuffle his pack. Joshua Zirkzee started for the first time this season, while Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu also slotted in with Amad being forced to play as the left attacking midfielder. The Toffees went a man down in the 13th minute when Idrissa Gueye got involved in a spat with his own teammate Michael Keane. He slapped the former United defender and saw a straight red. Amorim’s strange calls continued vs Everton At that point, the United head coach must have thought this would be a pleasant evening for his side. It proved to be anything but. It was David Moyes’ side who took the lead, and the hosts hardly mustered two passes together, forget shots on target, in the first half. Such was the disjointed display. And the Portuguese tactician’s subs in the second half did little to improve the team. Diogo Dalot coming on when the team needs a goal is a puzzling call to take. He hardly created any chances of note, and how the head coach keeps turning to him when the chips are down will never make sense. The lack of fight and spirit shown by the players when the opposition are down to 10 was concerning to say the least. And Amorim will not be impressed with what he saw from certain players. Zirkzee, and Kobbie Mainoo have been screaming for regular minutes, threatening to jump ship in January. And on Monday’s evidence, they should be allowed to depart for better alternatives. Zirkzee, Mainoo looked poor The Dutchman finished the game with a passing accuracy rate of only 60 per cent, and while he did come close to finding the equaliser, he looked lost up top and sloppy for the most part. And the Englishman lost all his duels after coming on as a substitute and hardly managed to affect the game. Monday was the perfect setting to remind the boss of their abilities, but both failed completely. Amorim’s call to continue to play with three at the back in the first half, while making redundant subs did not make things easy either. This team will continue to look wildly inconsistent until Amorim figures things out. Until then, mid-table is the best United can hope to finish in once the season concludes.
