“Phenomenal”: Former star left in awe of United ace’s moment of magic against Newcastle

Patrick Dorgu was Manchester United’s hero in the Red Devils’ 1-0 Boxing Day victory over Newcastle United. In a match where a Bruno Fernandes-less United were crying out for inspiration, the Dane stepped forward and delivered. Dorgu produced a complete performance that helped United stun the Magpies, the same side that had beaten them home and away last season. Asked to operate as an unorthodox right winger before eventually reverting to his natural role at left wing-back, the Dane duly rose to the occasion in that festive battle. So impressive was his display that WhoScored went on to include him in their Premier League Team of the Week. Naturally, praise has since poured in for the 21-year-old, with the latest admirer being former United goalkeeper Ben Foster. Foster raves about Dorgu On his Fozcast podcast, Foster raved about how Dorgu, with his decisive strike, turned a difficult moment into something that looked effortless: “Right, the goal, the strike, phenomenal, right? Brilliant,” Foster said on his Fozcast podcast. “The way that he’s running on to it… How difficult is it when you’re fully running on to something, and you’re fully, fully, fully, fully, fully [committed] and then to execute it? The amount of people who actually just missed the ball in that instance is phenomenal, honestly.” Foster added: “Balloon it, anything, right? The strike was amazing.” Turning point For a player who has struggled to break into this United side, that Boxing Day strike could prove pivotal in reshaping his fortunes at Old Trafford. As talented as he is, a consistent run of games and the confidence that comes with it may yet allow him to fulfil the high expectations many held when he arrived from Lecce. Indeed, with back-to-back goal contributions, an assist in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, followed by his winner against Newcastle, Dorgu heads into the clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers (Tuesday night) as one of United’s players to watch.
