More infoManchester United icon Paul Scholes has told Erik ten Hag’s side of two potential replacements for Cristiano Ronaldo after the striker had his Old Trafford contract terminated, including one man Chelsea could be set to sign. The Red Devils could bring forward plans to sign another attacking player in January following the Portugal star’s early exit, and the club have been linked with a host of players to fill that role.United have a rumoured interest in World Cup star Cody Gakpo after his three goals in the group stage for Holland, but Scholes believes a deal would be more likely in the summer. The former England man also insisted that Christopher Nkunku would be a good option up front for United, though Chelsea look closer to sealing that transfer.Graham Potter’s side have reportedly agreed a deal to sign the French forward from RB Leipzig for next season, though Scholes thinks he would suit United. “I think there’s a couple of forwards they might look at,” Scholes told MUTV. “The kid at RB Leipzig that’s been linked with Chelsea, Nkunku.“Centre-forward is obviously the big position that needs filling. We have Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford who can both play there, but I think Marcus prefers being out wide and Antony’s injury record isn’t great. January might be too soon [to replace Ronaldo], they’re probably looking at next summer now, but I do think there are players out there. Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to look at two forward options. (Image: MUTV)“The lad at PSV, Gakpo, is doing really well for the Netherlands at the World Cup and I think Ten Hag has been really interested in him before. There’s players out there for sure. January can be a tough window to do business but I hope we can do something and bring in a new centre-forward.”Ronaldo’s exit has opened up another spot among Ten Hag’s forward options, having given an interview with Piers Morgan where he criticised the club and his Dutch boss. Ronaldo has since been strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabian giants Al Nassr, where he has reportedly been offered £173million a season in the Middle East. DON’T MISSChelsea blow as new £60m signing talks up prospect of returning to old clubMudryk drops another Arsenal hint by giving verdict on three playersWales ‘shamed British football’ as Gareth Bale destroyed after England defeat Christopher Nkunku in action for RB Leipzig. But you’re talking about the biggest club in the world and probably the biggest player ever so there’s always going to be that spotlight on them both.“We look back now and it’s best for both parties. Ten Hag will be happy, it gives him that bit of breathing space now because he hasn’t got that superstar he has to deal with and he can concentrate on the players he’s got.”Think you can predict the World Cup Golden Boot Winner?
