Paul Pogba sends defiant message after Manchester United defeat to Young Boys

Midfielder Paul Pogba has vowed that Manchester United will “bounce back” following their last-gasp 2-1 defeat to Young Boys in their Champions League opener on Tuesday evening.

Despite taking a first half lead through summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo, United, who had right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent-off during the opening 45 minutes, were made to pay for a drop-off in pressure in the second half, with a 95th-minute winner from Jordan Siebatcheu ensuring the Reds started their group stage campaign with a whimper.

The substitute latched onto an under-hit back-pass from Jesse Lingard and instinctively buried the ball beyond David De Gea and into the back of the net, meaning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left to reflect on a disappointing European away result.

Although it was United’s first defeat of the season in all competitions, United and their boss Solskjaer have come in for heavy criticism.

However, refusing to get too downbeat, midfield ace Pogba, who played the full 90 minutes of the contest, has insisted that United will “bounce back,” issuing a rallying cry on his Instagram page.

The Frenchman, who will be looking to help United maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season on Sunday afternoon against West Ham, said: “Not the result we wanted, but we’ll bounce back.”

Whilst it will have been a tough result for Solskjaer and his players to stomach, particularly in the manner in which Young Boys clinched the victory, the Reds have not lost too much ground in the race to escape Group F and progress to the knockout stages, with Villarreal and Atalanta playing out a 2-2 draw in their opening group match.

As outlined above, United return to action when they face West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday, before facing the Hammers just three days later at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup third round.
