One Manchester United player named in BBC Team of the Week, ‘top class’ moment picked out

Manchester United put in a turgid performance upon the return from the international break, much to the frustration of supporters.

Manchester United were remarkably fortunate to get away with a point against Brentford in the team’s 1-1 draw – even though the team nearly won the game.

United were outplayed for most of the match, and relied upon goalkeeper Andre Onana bailing them out, with the help of the woodwork.

Onana was praised by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, who described his contribution to the performance as ‘fantastic’.

Andre Onana named in BBC team of the week

You would not have thought any Manchester United players would make the cut in any ‘best XI’s of the weekend after a performance like we witnessed at Brentford.

That’s what makes Andre Onana’s selection in the BBC team of the week to be a notable piece of praise for the Manchester United stopper.

Onana has barely had any credit from outside of United all season, with pundits queuing up to jump on any errors.

Garth Crooks has picked him in his ‘team of the week’, explaining via BBC Sport: “He’s not my favourite goalkeeper but his performances of late seem to have settled down considerably.

“Onana has made my team selection once before this season and seems to have settled down into some sort of routine and ironed out the errors.

“His save from Brentford’s Yehor Yarmoliuk at the foot of his right-hand post was top class and his recovery to stop Keane Lewis-Potter from putting the rebound away was just as impressive.”

Crooks went on to praise Brentford striker Ivan Toney as ‘remarkable’, praising his late assist which rescued a winner for the home side.

Andre Onana and Manchester United face two big matches next

At Manchester United, it’s always a case of looking onto the next challenge, and the performance against Brentford will be forgotten as we look ahead to the Chelsea game.

Andre Onana and Manchester United won against Chelsea earlier in the season, a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

The upcoming game on Thursday night is a good opportunity to get back on track, and Onana will do well to keep a clean sheet against an unpredictable Chelsea side who score a lot of goals but leak plenty defensively too.

Then United face Liverpool again in the league. Onana kept a clean sheet at Anfield, but conceded three in the dramatic FA Cup quarter-final a fortnight ago, which United won 4-3, with the game 2-2 after 90 minutes.

The Cameroon stopper is playing well right now and rightly picking up praise, but he has to continue in the next two games, and even after this, there is no rest, with a trip to Bournemouth and then a FA Cup semi-final on the horizon.
