Manchester United’s mixed season opening Domestically, Manchester United have begun the campaign well, winning three of their opening four fixtures of the 2021-2022 Premier League season as well as grabbing a draw against Southampton.

The free-scoring side have already netted 11 goals, the joint-most in the division, and sit atop the Premier League table by virtue of this metric, ahead of fellow challengers Chelsea. Having come second last time around, and lost the Europa League final, this already felt like a defining season for the club when it comes to silverware.

And that was before the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward, bought back for a second spell at the club, is a clear statement that trophies must be won this season. And while they are on the right track domestically, a shock defeat away to Young Boys has made the job of qualifying from the Champions League harder than it should have been.

With tricky fixtures against Atalanta and Villareal, as well as the game against Young Boys at Old Trafford, United will need to be on top form to ensure qualification to the knockout rounds.

Solskjaer provides Cavani update One man who has been conspicuously absent for the great start to the domestic campaign, however, is Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan forward is nursing an injury he picked up in pre-season, and is yet to feature this season.

When asked about the chances of him playing this weekend, however, Solskjaer pointed to the midweek Carabao Cup tie, also against West Ham, as a more realistic return date, saying:

“Edinson hopefully will start training with us after the weekend”

“Hopefully, maybe Monday. Maybe he’ll be involved on Wednesday because he had a fantastic season last season.”

With Ronaldo returning to lead the line, and youngsters Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford also around, it remains to be seen just how much gametime the 34-year-old will realistically get. However, he remains a fantastic and experienced option from the bench.
