Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could get the sack as a result of the Newcastle United takeover, says former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips. The constant pressure to succeed is the nature of being United manager and Solskjaer knows he must deliver silverware this season.

Steve Bruce is desperately fighting to save his job and reports suggest the current Newcastle boss could be sacked this week.

Newcastle are second from bottom and winless in the Premier League this season and a whole host of managers have been linked with the post since the £305million Saudi-led takeover was completed last Thursday.

Frank Lampard, Antonio Conte, Zinedine Zidane, Steven Gerrard and former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre are some of the names being mentioned to replace Bruce.

And Phillips thinks United wouldn’t want to miss out on the chance to hire the likes of Zidane or Conte at the expense of Newcastle, which could prompt them to make a decision.

“Solskjaer is under big pressure at the moment,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“Every week you step on to the touchline at Manchester United you are under pressure though. It is the nature of the job.

“The results and performances of late have not been good enough. There needs to be an improvement after the international break.

“The new ownership at Newcastle may trigger things in the United boardroom. They might make a decision if they fear Newcastle are going to take one of the top managers out there.

“I do not want to see any manager lose their job. But, put it this way, I would not be surprised if something happened quickly if Man United struggle in their next few games.

“United would not want a Conte or a Zidane going to Newcastle.”

Solskjaer’s side have won just two of their last six games after defeats against Young Boys in the Champions League, West Ham in the EFL Cup, and Aston Villa in the Premier League last month.

United were unconvincing against both West Ham in the league and Villarreal in the Champions League but managed to escape with all three points thanks to late goals in both contests.

The Red Devils were equally disappointing in the recent fixture against Everton before the international break which ended 1-1 at Old Trafford.

Club football returns this weekend and United will travel to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester on Saturday.

Newcastle will play host to Nuno Espirito Santo’s Tottenham on Sunday in what will be the first game of the new era at St James’ Park.
