Official: United star marks special milestone by scooping up top award

Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu has won the club’s December Goal of the Month award for his stunning volley against Newcastle. Dorgu’s stunner Dorgu scored the only goal of the contest as United beat Newcastle 1-0 at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. United were under pressure to register a victory, having been beaten by Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in the previous fixture. In the absence of Amad, Bryan Mbeumo, Noussair Mazraoui, and the injured quartet of Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Amorim was forced to alter his approach and deploy a four-man defence. This radical change saw Dorgu deployed in an advanced role on the right. The Dane performed admirably in the largely unfamiliar position. The highlight of his performance was his 24th-minute volley. Diogo Dalot’s long throw inside the box was met by Nick Woltemade, who couldn’t quite head it sufficiently away from the danger area. Dorgu was first to the loose ball. In one fluid motion, the 21-year-old unleashed a first-time strike that nestled into the bottom corner, well past the reach of a helpless Aaron Ramsdale. He broke into wild celebration and the goal gave him confidence for the rest of the game, which he saw out brilliantly as United clinched all three points. Dorgu wins award United have confirmed that the volley has been named the Goal of the Month for December. Dorgu’s goal was up against two other fantastic strikes. These were Bruno Fernandes’ fantastic free-kick in the dramatic 4-4 draw with Bournemouth, as well as Matheus Cunha’s sensational finish in the loss vs. Villa. Dorgu’s goal received the most votes, marking a special achievement in a truly memorable fashion. Meanwhile, United return to action on Sunday when they go away to Elland Road to take on a rejuvenated Leeds United side.
