Official: Ex-United ace crowned league’s best player overall after his title-winning heroics

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been named Serie A’s MVP after guiding his side to a remarkable title victory.

McTominay capped off a brilliant first season in Italy with a stunning opening strike in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Cagliari on Friday, which secured them the Scudetto.

He has been in fine form since leaving United last summer, scoring an impressive 12 goals and providing an additional six assists.

The Scotland international has been a key player for Napoli under Antonio Conte and his excellent contributions to the Partenopei were recognised when the Serie A MVP awards were announced. McTominay was crowned the best player overall in the Italian top flight.

It has truly been an incredible turnaround for McTominay, who struggled for form and minutes at United before his £25m departure.

Earlier this month, Napoli boss Antonio Conte explained that McTominay’s success in Italy is down to the player having a defined role and set of responsibilities at the club – things he lacked at United.

For much of his time at Old Trafford, McTominay was deployed as a defensive midfielder. It wasn’t until Erik ten Hag took charge that his goal-scoring instincts came to the fore, with the Dutch manager predominantly utilising him in more advanced positions.

After the final whistle vs. Cagliari, an emotional McTominay told DAZN [as quoted by ESPN], “The sacrifice of every single player in this group is just incredible.”

“The people deserve it, as they’ve been behind us from day one. For me to come here and experience this, it’s just a dream.”

He added about life in Naples, “My Italian is OK, I can understand, but speaking it takes more confidence and it’s not easy.”

“It is much easier to do it with people who don’t speak any English. I can feel a lot of love.”

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they host Aston Villa for their final Premier League game of the season. Kick-off is at 16:00 BST.
