Solskjaer: Lingard still has a big part to play

David Moyes has shed light on West Ham ‘s transfer negotiations with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for Manchester United ‘s Jesse Lingard.

The midfielder enjoyed a superb spell on loan from February to May with the Irons but returned to Old Trafford over the summer and has remained with the Red Devils beyond deadline day.

Lingard hit nine goals in 16 Premier League games during his east London loan, helping Moyes’ men qualify for the Europa League group stages.

West Ham’s continental campaign got off to a winning start in Croatia on Thursday as they beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 and are now preparing for their return to domestic action this weekend.

“Ole made it clear to me quite early in the transfer window that he wanted to keep him,” the Scot stated via Eurosport .

“I knew pretty early in the transfer window that he was staying at Manchester United.”

Solskjaer has publicly stated that Lingard has a ‘big part to play’ for the Red Devils this season and scored in last Saturday’s victory over Newcastle, despite reportedly rejected a new contract at Old Trafford.

United’s manager defended the substitute for his error.

“We’re humans, every footballer makes mistakes. With Jesse, no footballer likes making mistakes but it’s obviously part and parcel of the game,” Solskjaer explained.

“We’ll learn from it, he’ll learn from it. He’ll pick himself up and be ready to go on Sunday against West Ham.”

Captain Harry Maguire added: “I’m sure everyone on that pitch today has made a mistake. I’m sure Jesse will pick himself up.

“It’s the first game in the group. We’ve got many games to bounce back and we must do. We’ll try and pick up three points in our next game and build momentum from there.”

Ahead of Sunday’s clash, Solskjaer was asked about Lingard’s future, responding candidly as he affirmed his desire to keep the attacking midfielder around.

“He’s got this season left on his contract, the club is talking to him and his dad and we see him as a Manchester United player in the future,” revealed the Norwegian.

“Jesse has come back into us after a great spell at West Ham. He’s shown his qualities and is back in the England squad, he scored goals for England and we really want to see the best of Jesse this season.

“We support him and want to keep him here with us. He’s a red through and through.”
