Southgate praises team performance as England thrash Albania at Wembley

Micah Richards has issued his public support to Harry Maguire after ex- Manchester United midfielder and pundit Roy Keane described his goal celebration for England as “embarrassing”.

After putting the Three Lions in the lead at home to Albania, Maguire wheeled away in celebration – knee sliding while also putting his fingers in his ears, appearing to send a message to his critics.

The gesture sparked backlash from fans and pundits alike – including Keane, but Richards has taken to twitter to explain why he feels Maguire was justified in his actions.

Richards wrote: “People: ‘Footballers are like robots, they have no personality!’

“Harry Maguire – Scores the opening goal for his country, celebrates with real passion whilst referencing those who have been criticising him. People: ‘That’s embarrassing.'”

Maguire has endured a torrid start to the season at club level, but put his poor form aside to head England in front at Wembley – the first of five goals from Gareth Southgate’s side on the night.

A Harry Kane hat-trick and a lone strike from Jordan Henderson ensured England need just one point from their final qualifier to seal their place at next year’s World Cup, but it was Maguire’s celebrations that had everyone talking.

At the half-time interval, Keane made his thoughts on the situation clear while covering the contest as part of ITV’s coverage.

The Irishman said: “He puts his hand to his ear. He’s like shutting the critics up but I think that’s embarrassing. He’s been a disgrace the past few months for Manchester United.

“He thinks he scores there, he’s going to shut his critics up. Embarrassing.”

Fellow ITV pundit Ian Wright echoed Keane’s sentiments, claiming: “You just don’t need to do it.

“It’s something I probably would have done, but you don’t need to do that because you’ve got a lot of football still to play.

“Don’t give them the opportunity to say ‘right, we’ve got to him’. Just play your game, Harry.”

Roy Keane was less than impressed with Harry Maguire’s celebration, dubbing it “embarrassing” Maguire has since explained the celebration, insisting it wasn’t directed at anyone in particular.

“The celebration was a knee slide, it just came naturally to me. It’s an amazing feeling to score for my country,” United’s skipper claimed.

“It wasn’t directed at anyone, it just came naturally to do that and open the scoring for England and get the important three points.”
