Manchester United vs Charlton Athletic live: Score and latest updates from Carabao Cup quarter-final – GETTY IMAGESBy Mike McGrath, at Old TraffordAt this time last season Marcus Rashford was about to start a run of three months without finding the net. His confidence was drained and he looked lost in front of goal. It could not be further from the player he is today, with his goals taking Manchester United into the top four and now within sight of Wembley. United toiled against their League One opponents, who trailed to Antony’s opener and stayed in the tie.It was not until Rashford came on as a substitute that a place in the EFL Cup semi-final was sealed, his two goals making it six consecutive games in which he has been on the scoresheet. Rashford admitted he struggled mentally last season when he was out of the team and not in the right frame of mind to perform at his best. But the confidence that started returning this season was emboldened at the World Cup and he has scored in every game since Qatar.Heading into the Manchester derby on Saturday, it is United who have the striker in the best scoring form since club football resumed, with Rashford outscoring Erling Haaland. “When he puts himself in the position in the one-on-ones in the box or the team does, he will score. That is what he is doing at the moment,” said United manager Erik ten Hag. “When he keeps the focus and keeps putting the same effort in he will keep on scoring.”Rashford’s rejuvenation has been part of United’s return to form. During the early days of Ten Hag’s tenure, merely staying afloat in the Premier League seemed to be the aim, yet the Dutchman is now within sight of Wembley and two victories away from silverware in his first season at Old Trafford. His brief may have been to stabilise and rebuild a team capable of getting back into the Champions League, and dining at Europe’s top table remains the target. But how United fans would enjoy the taste of glory for the first time in six years, having not enjoyed success since the days of Jose Mourinho. Ten Hag still requires a striker and hopes to have Wout Weghorst on board soon when a loan from Burnley is sorted. He played without a striker in this tie and wants bodies in attack to ensure they can compete on multiple fronts. It was the type of match Cristiano Ronaldo would have been in line to play in, given he had been on the bench for Premier League games.Manchester United vs Charlton Athletic live: Score and latest updates from Carabao Cup quarter-final – GETTY IMAGESWithout one of their greatest players, they could still end the season with silverware and a finish in the top four. Either of those would give Ten Hag huge satisfaction, given his starting point in the summer. “You’re only here for the Charlton” sang the away fans, some 9,000 of them filling a corner of Old Trafford and making themselves heard, cheering every tackle made by their players. They were determined to enjoy their first trip to the stadium for 16 years, since they were last rubbing shoulders with the big teams of the Premier League.Their manager, Dean Holden, is a lifelong United fan who has a season ticket and once sneaked into the ground dressed as a steward, so he knows all about the club’s production line of academy talent. But even he may have been shocked to see Kobbie Mainoo on the team-sheet for the hosts.Born in Stockport, Mainoo has impressed Ten Hag in training and the 17-year-old was given his chance in the No 10 role looking to feed the ball into the path of Anthony Elanga ahead of him. Harry Maguire’s start, along with £190 million of signings on the bench, pointed to Ten Hag using the tie to use his second string. Yet it was one of his big summer signings who opened the scoring, doing so in spectacular fashion.United were happily passing the ball in front of Charlton’s back line as they sat on the edge of their area, yet the visitors gave Antony too much time when he received the ball 25 yards from goal. Before there was a chance to sense danger, the Brazilian had curled the ball into the top corner. The £82 million summer signing from Ajax has used the cups to find his goalscoring form. He had not scored since mid-October until finding the net against Everton in the FA Cup at the weekend, and now had two in quick succession.Manchester United’s Brazilian midfielder Antony (R) shoots to score the opening goal of the English League Cup quarter final football match between Manchester United and Charlton Athletic, at Old Trafford, in Manchester, north-west England on January 10, 2023 – OLI SCARFF/AFP via Getty ImagesCharlton’s best chance came through Scott Fraser, who fired over the bar from a good position early in the second half. As the game wore on, Ten Hag called for his substitutes such as Casemiro and Christian Eriksen to see out the game. Casemiro was the architect of Rashford’s first goal with a beautiful pass that set United away, as Facundo Pellistri got an assist on his debut. Rashford raced through in stoppage time to add to his tally with a cool finish.“I was quite happy with it,” Ten Hag said. “We started the game very well. There was good energy and focus. We pinned them in their half. We created chances. Diogo Dalot, Fred, big opportunities. Alejandro Garnacho was good one-on-one but then we made a great goal for 1-0.”United were given an injury scare ahead of the Manchester derby when Dalot was forced off. “It was a precaution, we have to see in the coming hours and make a decision,” Ten Hag said.Manchester United vs Charlton Athletic, Carabao Cup quarter-final as it happened10:29 PMNot an entirely meaningful statistic this oneBut it is something, I guess?10:29 PMErik ten Hag speaks”I said before no ifs, buts maybes, we have to be in the semi-final. I think we had to finish the game early on but in the end it’s the objective to get into the semi-final so compliments to the team. That was the plan [to bring on Casemiro, Rashford and Eriksen on the hour], to stay in the rhythm for the coming games.”The only thing maybe I am not that happy with was that we had to finish the game early on by finishing the scoring chances, I think we had great chances in the first half… I think Garnacho created a lot. Also second half great save from the goalie. I don’t think we allowed them that much.””Today we have seen again that all the subs were ready.”10:23 PMWhat next for Erik ten Hag’s men?It is fair to say that there are far sterner tests awaiting in the league. On Sunday they host Manchester City, followed by a trip to Crystal Palace next Wednesday. Then it’s league leaders Arsenal away on Sunday January 22. Come out of that with three points, or even two, and I think they will be happy.10:20 PMUnited’s eight wins in a row4-2 vs Aston Villa1-2 vs Fulham2-0 vs Burnley3-0 vs Nottingham Forest0-1 vs Wolves3-0 vs Bournemouth3-1 vs Everton3-0 vs Charlton Athletic10:09 PMSo that is Manchester United through to the semisManchester United’s Marcus Rashford, centre, celebrates with teammates after scoring his side’s second goal during the English League Cup quarter final soccer match between Manchester United and Charlton Athletic at Old Trafford in Manchester, England, Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023 – AP Photo/Dave ThompsonIn tonight’s other fixture Newcastle beat Leicester 2-0 at St James’ Park, so they too progress to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. The performance was good in the first half and a bit dodgy in the second, but that is now eight wins on the spin for Erik ten Hag’s men.10:05 PMA decent run for Rashford10:00 PMFULL TIME: Man Utd 3 Charlton 0A little harsh on Charlton? Maybe, but United deserving of their win. The three substitutes that Erik ten Hag made on the hour mark made a difference in the end. It needed to, the game was drifting when it should have been over and Charlton were threatening to send the game to penalties.09:57 PMGOAL! Man Utd 3 Charlton 0And that is that.Rashford with his second of the game. Casemiro plays a wonderful ball over the top with the outside of his right boot, Rashford is in space and takes the ball in his stride on the edge of the box before lashing home a left-footed half-volley! Well taken and now seven in six for the England forward.Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, left, scores his side’s third goal past Charlton’s goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer during the English League Cup quarter final soccer match between Manchester United and Charlton Athletic at Old Trafford in Manchester, England, Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023 – AP Photo/Dave Thompson09:54 PM90+1 mins – Man Utd 2 Charlton 0Probably a fair scoreline in the end but the usual “credit to Charlton” applies. They’ve given it a good go and were well in the game for most of the second half. Comfortably second best and with very few decent chances, in truth.09:52 PMGOAL! Man Utd 2 Charlton 0Pellistri picks the ball up on the break after a fine ball from deep in midfield, on the right he finds Rashford on the left of the box, who he slots coolly away with his right foot, chipping the advancing goalkeeper. Another goal and United are almost certainly in the semi-finals.Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, centre top, scores his side’s second goal past Charlton’s goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer during the English League Cup quarter final soccer match between Manchester United and Charlton Athletic at Old Trafford in Manchester, England, Tuesday, Jan. 10, 202 – AP Photo/Dave ThompsonSix in six for Rashford now.09:50 PM87 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0After a decent first-half for a much-changed United, the second half has been unconvincing. Pellistri threads one through to McTominay whose left foot shot from 12 yards out is blocked. Charlton live to fight another day.Charlton threaten again as the ball falls to Leaburn in the United box, but he cannot quite free his feet to get the shot away.09:47 PM85 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0The corner is punched out by Maynard-Brewer, not entirely convincingly but United fail to make the most of their follow-up. Elanga off and Facundo Pellistri on for the home team.09:46 PM84 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Casemiro with a quick, long pass to Elanga, then it’s over to Garnacho on the left. His cross is cleared, back to Eriksen… back to Garnacho in the box and then back to Eriksen whose left-footed snap shot from 15 yards out is well saved down low to his left by Maynard-Brewer! Out for a corner. Another crucial save from the Charlton goalie.09:44 PM81 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Garnacho a livewire again with a run down the left. A bit like early Giggs without the control. He manages to cut it back from the byline, but the ball ends up behind for a corner.09:42 PM79 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Maguire is booked for committing a foul which is a blatant attempt to stop a Charlton counter attack after he drove out of position and forward into the visitors’ half.09:41 PM78 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0United, strangely, giving the air of a team clinging on here, rather than going for a winning goal. A goal that they should probably have already scored.Soccer Football – Carabao Cup – Quarter Final – Manchester United v Charlton Athletic – Old Trafford, Manchester, Britain – January 10, 2023 Charlton Athletic’s Albie Morgan in action with Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez and Manchester United’s Tyrell Malacia – REUTERSCharlton without the requisite quality to create a clear cut chance but like this it only takes one mistake or one moment of brilliance. Martinez is making – and is having to – some crucial challenges.09:39 PM77 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Fraser takes with his left foot, over the wall but it’s down low and Heaton claims easily. Not enough power on it and straight at the keeper.09:39 PM75 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Looks perhaps like Maynard-Brewer handled the ball when claiming it sliding out of his area, trying to stop a United attack. Not clear cut either way on first replay and the referee was close and says no. On second replay he’s probably okay. Probably just let go in time.Charlton then break and win a free-kick after Malacia fouls. It’s about 22 yards out, just right of centre…09:36 PM74 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Sessegnon sends in a cross from the left, Heaton is challenged by Burn but the keeper jumps and claims cleanly, though it would have been an uncomfortable moment.United come again, this time on the right through Eriksen and Wan-Bissaka. Rashford, who hasn’t done much since coming on, dribbles looking for the shot but loses the ball…Charlton break but the attack ends with a sliding tackle from Martinez. A crucial one it was, too, with Leaburn on the charge. Charlton win a throw.09:33 PM71 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Garnacho to Eriksen, who sends it across the face of the goal but nobody picks it up, apart from Wan-Bissaka, who keeps the ball in play.09:32 PM69 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0A bit of frustration at Old Trafford? Not quite, but the home fans find their voice with their team looking for a second goal. They probably should not only be only a goal up now but they are. He shifts the ball onto his right, just inside the penalty box but Maynard-Brewer at full stretch to his left makes an excellent two-handed save.09:26 PM63 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Man Utd have not settled in this half, really. Far less of the ball, Charlton are playing with intent. They say 2-0 is the most dangerous lead but, clearly, it is not – 1-0 is and that is where United find themselves. Another goal would probably kill the tie and Charlton’s spirit.Dean Holden looks on, and he should be encouraged with what he is seeing.Charlton’s English manager Dean Holden catches the ball during the English League Cup quarter final football match between Manchester United and Charlton Athletic, at Old Trafford, in Manchester, north-west England on January 10, 2023. – OLI SCARFF/AFP via Getty Images09:22 PM59 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Looks like Casemiro, Eriksen and Rashford are all coming on. Big names there. Erik ten Hag wants to close this game out and who can blame him? Charlton are posing more of a threat now and Ten Hag’s team are not as comfortable in the middle of the park as they were in the first half.Antony, Fred and Mainoo all come off for the aforementioned trio.09:20 PM57 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0United give the ball away and Charlton cause a few problems on the left, eventually winning a corner. Or do they? Nope, looks like the referee has given a free kick for a high foot on Lisandro Martinez. Charlton much improved in this half. Antony picks it up on the right, dithers a bit as the Charlton defence regroups… but he did not have many options. Antony gets the ball again and shoots from distance from the left, with his left. Struck powerfully this time and it flies a yard or so beyond the far post. Good effort.09:14 PM52 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Promising start in the second half for Charlton. Nothing significant since that Fraser chance but the intent is there. They continue to press the hosts, who have been a little shaky so far this half. Only a little, though. That is underlined by an overhit cross-field pass which rolls out for a throw, Garnacho unable to get to the ball.09:11 PM49 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0United think they have the ball in the net for 2-0…Fred sends the ball out to Wan-Bissaka on the right, it’s a dangerous cross which Elanga puts into the goal but he’s at least two yards offside and is rightly flagged.09:09 PM46 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0They do! They have their first half-decent chance of the game. It’s a quick break, Fraser gets the ball about 20 yards out on the left half of the box. He has a pop and it’s well-struck but unfortunately it was never heading goalwards at any point. He’s annoyed and he should be. SECOND HALFUnited get things under way. Can Charlton build on that improved final 10 minutes to get a sniff in front of goal?08:53 PMHALF TIME: Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Charlton have had to endure a lot in that half. No real chances of their own, though they have had a few breaks. United have been sharp and incisive without creating a bagful of chances. Charlton should be pleased to go in at 1-0, they’re still in the game.Fred of Manchester United battles for possession with Albie Morgan of Charlton Athletic during the Carabao Cup Quarter Final match between Manchester United and Charlton Athletic at Old Trafford on January 10, 2023 in Manchester, England – Gareth Copley/Getty ImagesGarnacho has been lively on the left. The difference was a sublime strike from Antony, which was then nearly followed up by another of similar quality by countryman Fred.08:48 PM44 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0United knocking the ball around in the vicinity of the Charlton penalty box but then lose it. Charlton counter again with Morgan. He moves it out to Clare on the right wing and a dangerous, low cross comes in but Heaton dives forward to claim it in front of goal. Decent from Charlton in the last 10 minutes. Blackett-Taylor was waiting at the far post.08:47 PM42 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0A quick counter attack from Charlton… but it ends up being more dangerous-looking than actually dangerous, it being snuffed out before the play gets near the United penalty area. They come again, though, with Blackett-Taylor and Wan-Bissaka going toe-to-toe… Wan-Bissaka slides in and it looked like it could have been a free-kick but no, nothing doing.08:45 PM41 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Charlton have been far from woeful here. It’s only 1-0 anyway. Could have been 2-0. United have not exactly been rampant but the visitors have consistently been overrun and look, understandably, outclassed. They’ve tried to attack with intent when they have had the ball but have not found any openings of any degree.08:41 PM38 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Malacia fouls Morgan to shut down a Charlton counter attack. Not sure it was a foul, but Charlton waste the possession with a massively overhit cross-field pass which goes straight out for a United throw.08:39 PM36 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Fred is lining up the free-kick. It’s probably 26 yards out… it’s wonderfully struck with the inside of his left foot and it cannons off the near post! It all peters out with an overhit cross. Charlton claim a corner but it’s a United goal kick.Fred is fouled by Morgan about 22 yards out, in front of the penalty box.08:32 PM29 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Charlton having to soak up a lot of pressure here. Malacia and Garnacho link up again on the left but the latter runs with the ball but probably should have passed before he was dispossessed.08:30 PM27 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0The excellent and menacing Garnacho involved again on the left, dancing his way through the Charlton defenders. He pulls it back again, but this time he and McTominay – waiting on the edge of the box – are not on the same wavelength and the Scottish midfielder cannot get anywhere near it to even think about getting a shot away.08:27 PM24 mins – Man Utd 1 Charlton 0That goal, probably, was coming… to be fair. Again, a tall task for Charlton has become that little bit taller.08:25 PMGOAL! Man Utd 1 Charlton 0Antony with a stunning shot from 19 yards out!A well-worked move, and Antony picks the ball up on the right of the pitch, lines it up with the inside of his left foot. He sends it flying into (or near enough) the top left corner of the goal, well beyond the reach of the Charlton goalkeeper. A lovely goal. Not much Maynard-Brewer could have done about that at all.Manchester United’s Brazilian midfielder Antony (R) shoots to score the opening goal of the English League Cup quarter final football match between Manchester United and Charlton Athletic, at Old Trafford, in Manchester, north-west England on January 10, 2023 – OLI SCARFF/AFP via Getty Images08:21 PM18 mins – Man Utd 0 Charlton 0Some respite for Charlton as they win a free kick and advance up the pitch. They may as well go for it, they are pressing and are pretty aggressive – not just sitting back.08:18 PM15 mins – Man Utd 0 Charlton 0Charlton’s first corner is better than either of United’s. Heaton paws it away with the ball then coming back to rest in his arms with a follow-up shot. United break but can’t find an opening in the Charlton penalty box.Charlton’s Clare is stricken on the ground all while that carries on after a collision with Heaton. He’s already wearing a mask for a facial injury of some kind and you wonder whether than has aggravated an existing issue. He receives treatment as the game is stopped.08:16 PM13 mins – Man Utd 0 Charlton 0Charlton’s first foray into the opposition half. Blackett-Taylor charges down the left, puts a cross in and wins a corner.08:15 PM12 mins – Man Utd 0 Charlton 0Another good chance, Fred is fed the ball from the left around 16 yards out, unmarked, lets fly with his left foot but it is blocked behind for a corner. The corner, like the previous one, is wasted. Malacia overhits this one by a mile after scuffing his first one.08:13 PM10 mins – Man Utd 0 Charlton 0Fair to say that Charlton have not had much of the ball at all in the first 10 minutes. McTominay sends a ball forward to Elanga from deep in the Charlton half but it’s flagged offside. A full-blooded challenge on the follow-up from Sessegnon as it runs back to Malacia… he is thrown in the air but was offside anyway.08:07 PM4 mins – Man Utd 0 Charlton 0United very much on the front foot in these early exchanges. Erik ten Hag’s men come into tonight’s game in arguably their best form for several years. Yes, the team had the odd good run under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but there is a difference now in the way the team is playing. They also look like they have more of a clue than they ever have had. That is not to say that this will amount to anything this season or that the team has made a breakthrough, but it is difficult to deny the solid progress, that awful defeat to Manchester City in the league a few months ago aside.Their recent form since that 6-3 hammering reads: played 17, won 14, drawn two, lost one, 33 goals for and just six goals against. Admittedly, that period has not been filled with especially stern tests (with Newcastle, Chelsea and Tottenham the best of that bunch) but there is little arguing in that form. Ten Hag has given the club hope again at a particularly turbulent time, with the club up for sale. He also obviously deserves credit for the way he handled the Cristiano Ronaldo debacle and the club are probably much better off without him.The visitors to Old Trafford are in less sparkling form, sitting 12th in League One, some 26 points off the summit with just seven wins in 25 games. They overcame Brighton in the previous round, winning 5-3 on penalties after a 0-0 scoreline after 90 minutes. You would get very long odds on them causing an upset tonight (they are around 15/1 at most bookmakers).Manchester United’s Norwegian striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a shot blocked by Charlton’s Danny Miles September 9. Yesterday the board of Manchester United agreed to sell the club to television broadcasters BSkyB for a reported sum of 625 million pounds sterling – REUTERSIn their brief spell in the Premier League they played United 16 times, taking just two points off them in that time. The last time they beat them in any form was more than 33 years ago in the old Division One. It is a tall task and a tough ask.The teams will be out shortly but we will be here for all the build-up, live updates and reaction for the game which kicks off at 8pm GMT.
