Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford’s future remains uncertain with less than a month left of the transfer window.
Time in Spain
Rashford fell out with Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim in December 2024 and was subsequently loaned out in January 2025 to Aston Villa.
He impressed sufficiently to earn a loan to FC Barcelona for all of last season, where he won the league and Super Cup trophy.
It seemed for most of his time in Spain that he would be signed permanently by the Catalans, but they never signed off on the deal and he returned to United.
With England’s involvement in the World Cup semi-finals, Rashford has still not returned to Carrington as he is on holiday.
Nonetheless, Rashford released a statement earlier this week saying goodbye to Barcelona, implying that he will not be playing for the club again.
Hansi Flick’s words
The German coach clearly always had a good relationship with Rashford and it seems more of a club decision that he was not bought than from the manager’s perspective.
Sky Sports covered the manager’s comments after the Catalans’ pre-season game in England and he expressed his gratitude for Rashford’s work in Barcelona.
Flick explained, “what I can say about Marcus is I appreciated working with him. Sometimes it’s not always… you don’t know what happens with players who are on loan.”
He also implied the decision may have been financial rather than for footballing reasons when he explained, “our situation also is not easy, but I appreciate him a lot working with him; he’s a fantastic player, a fantastic person.”
Finally, he commented that, “I think also the team miss him; I will miss him, but that’s life.”
Rashford is expected to return from holiday in early August, which should shed more light on his future.
