Manchester United were unhappy at the way Mason Greenwood was treated earlier in the season, according to reports. The England international has been in prolific form recently, scoring eight goals from his last 12 matches across all competitions. And that’s quite a turnaround given how his campaign initially started.

Manchester United saw Greenwood shine last season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cut both Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku loose in the hope it would help the 19-year-old develop.

And the Norwegian’s faith and judgement was rewarded, with the teenager scoring 17 goals across all competitions as the club finished third in the Premier League table.

At the start of this season, however, Greenwood struggled.

And his misery was compounded when he was sent home from international duty in disgrace, after breaching coronavirus rules in Iceland.

He later apologised for his actions, saying: “Having now had the chance to reflect on what’s happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused.

“It was irresponsible of me to break the COVID-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public.

“In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me.

“Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.

“I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from.”

And the Mirror claim United were unhappy at the way Greenwood was treated at the time.

It’s said the whole incident left an ‘after-taste’, with some club officials angry at how the situation played out.

But now, months on, Greenwood is back.

With eight goals in his last 12 matches he’s staking his claim to make England’s squad for the upcoming European Championships, which begin next month.

And Solskjaer, speaking recently, expressed a belief Greenwood should make the cut.

“I’m sure Gareth knows,” he said.

“He knows Mason well enough. He knows Mason can turn a game around in one split second.

“He’s working, learning on the job, getting more robust and he’s played more than 100 games for us and is our top goal scorer as a teenager, he’s been incredible.

“He’ll have a long, long future with England and I’m sure Gareth will think long and hard about which 26 he’s going to pick. I like him, I like the boy which says itself what I would do.

“His body is not really filled out yet and he might not be ready for all of these games but he’s got something special.

“He’s had to bear a lot of responsibility and he’s popped up with so many important goals for us.

“The kid just turns the game around in one split second and the goal against Aston Villa was excellent so I’m delighted that he’s got back to his goalscoring best and he’s learning more and more, all the other bits as well.”

Greenwood recently came United’s record teenage goalscorer.

And, speaking afterwards, he admitted he was determined to make more history further down the line.

“Hopefully there are many more to come,” said the 19-year-old.

“I’ll try and keep scoring goals so no one else can come and break the record in the future! I’m happy scoring goals.”
